Summary[]
Mikhail shares a cell with Vanitas and introduces himself, saying that he can also call him Misha. However, Vanitas states he is no longer called Mikhail, but Number 71 and they are Moreau's guinea pigs. Moreau starts experimenting with Mikhail, which causes him great pain. One of the nurses states that Mikhail is too young and won't survive, but tells her to bring the next child, but gets excited stating that he is close in creating what he is after, humans serving as a link.
While Mikhail is being taken for another experiment, he begs Vanitas for help. Vanitas then decides to volunteer in Mikhail's place and help Moreau achieve his noble purpose. Moreau finds that marvelous as there have been no other child willing to cooperate in his experiments. That night, Mikhail thanks Vanitas and decides to sleep in his bed.
Moreau tells Vanitas and Mikhail that his experiment is entering his final phase and that he will link the two of them to the Books of Vanitas. Moreau explains that the book are made by the Vanitas of the Blue Moon and use a special form of Astermite to be powered. Supposedly, one can use the books to alter the World Formula. Mikhail points out he said supposedly, which angers Moreau who then explains that the books won't open no matter what he tries, and have heard that only members of the Blue Moon Clan can open them. Because of that, Moreau decided to make them into quasi members of the Blue Moon Clan. Moreau then reveals he had been injecting them with the blue blood of the Vampire of the Blue Moon.
Vanitas gets angry and wants to kill Moreau, but his men ties him up to a chair. Moreau then states that once he activates the machine, it may turns their brains into vegetables, so he wants to thank them now. The machine is then activated, but the Vanitas of the Blue Moon appears and causes it to fail and explode. The vampire prepares to leave after taking its books, but Mikhail gets him to get take them with him. Stating its his fault that they are in this situation, the vampire picks up Mikhail and asks Vanitas if he wishes to come as well. After a moment of thinking, Vanitas decides to go as well.
They get far away, but Vanitas believes its not far away and Chasseurs will chase them. The vampire states that Moreau was doing things banned by the Church and they will be dealing with covering that and likely executing the researches and won't be coming after them. They start to introduce themselves and Mikhail is first to introduce himself. The vampire then states he has no name or at least no name that he found fitting, but they call him Vampire of the Blue Moon and sometimes Vanitas. Hearing that, Vanitas jumps and attacks the vampire, but he easily stops the attack with his hand. The vampire comments that he went right after his eyes, realizing he was trained to be a Chasseur. Vanitas asks if he took them to eat them or to reclaim the blue blood they were given. The vampire tells him it took them only because they asked. Vanitas then falls unconscious.
Vanitas wakes up in a house and the vampire explains it belongs to a human friend. He tells Vanitas that he needs to rest and wishes to sing him a lullaby, wondering what songs was his mother singing him, revealing that Vanitas called out "mother" in his delirium. Vanitas doesn't believe it, as his mother died when he was born and he would never call for her. The vampire wonders if Vanitas then lived with his father alone, but Vanitas explains there were others and his father was from a good family and became a doctor. However, he abandoned them when he met his mother who was part of a travelling show. Vanitas believed that his father hated him, since his mother died because of him, but when vampires attacked them, his father died protecting him and he will never know why. Vanitas reveals he hates vampires and wants to kill them all, which is why he joined the Chasseurs. At Moreau's lab, the vampires were often experimented on, but gradually Vanitas felt that humans are bigger monsters. The vampire wonders why Vanitas didn't escape and Vanitas reveals that Moreau led the Chasseurs believe that he died in battle and also told him that if he escapes, he will get another child, making Vanitas feeling he has no choice but to remain. The vampire states that Vanitas is a kind child, although Vanitas tries to deny it.
In the morning, Vanitas tells Mikhail to forget everything he said last night. The vampire then calls them for breakfast, but as they see it, Vanitas questions the vampire if it really wish to kill them as the food looks like a toxic waste. The vampire states its soup and it has lots of herbs and he even prepared them fresh milk, but Vanitas wonders why the milk is black and the whole place itself looks super dirty, so he should at least clean from time to time. The vampire gets offended and tells Vanitas to do it all by himself. Vanitas then cleans the place and prepares food, amazing both the vampire and Mikhail.
The vampire then reveals that Vanitas and Mikhail will eventually die, it may take months or years, but due to Moreau's experiments their bodies are beyond what a human is and they are closer to vampires. Their bodies waver precariously on a razor's edge, at any point the balance may tip and causes their bodies to begin breaking down. They can come with him and together they will look for ways to save them. Eventually Mikhail shows symptoms and the vampire states there is a way to save him, making his part of his vampire clan, but its something he wishes to avoid. Mikhail wishes to become a member of his clan, as that would mean they will always be together, but Vanitas prefers staying human until his very end. One day, Mikhail sees the vampire dying in Vanitas hands.
Vanitas finds Mikhail and Noé, asking Mikhail what he did to Noé.
