Jun Mochizuki Wiki

Carpe Diem (カルペ・ディエム, Karupe Diemu), also known as the Crimson Gauntlet ( (あか) いガントレット, Akai Gantoretto), is a weapon from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. It is a large mechanized gauntlet with the ability to spew fire from its palm that serves as the signature weapon of Jeanne. It had been created especially for her centuries ago during the height of the race War between humans and Vampires, being used by her as a Bourreau to slaughter traitors of her own race. The sight of Jeanne executing over a thousand Vampires with her flames-spitting gauntlet is what earned her the widely feared moniker of "The Hellfire Witch."

Description[]

Carpe Diem has been shown to have been purposely crafted to extend past natural arm-length and was crafted from an unidentified crimson-colored metal. Carpe Diem possesses a pauldron, rerebrace and couter, and in addition, the main body of the gauntlet leads into a razor-sharp clawed hand in which a central orb is placed in the center of the palm from which Carpe Diem's explosive power is released. Jeanne is shown to carry Carpe Diem in a large black coffin, though it is unknown whether the coffin is simply a carrying case she fashioned herself or if it is the only means in which it can be kept in.

Powers and Abilities[]

Carpe Diem is Jeanne's main choice of weapon at all times, having been created specifically for her to match her skill in battle by Marquis Machina in the middle of the War.[1] With the Gauntlet, Jeanne's destructive force amplifies tenfold, allowing her to crush entire streets of stone with only a swipe of the Gauntlet's claws. And by activating the Astermite that powers the Gauntlet, she can aim waves of white-hot flame that will incinerate the entire area surrounding her. With only herself alone and her Gauntlet in her hands, Jeanne has slaughtered over a thousand Vampires who betrayed their own race in the War.[2] She is also clever and resourceful in the way she uses her Gauntlet, often aiming it downwards at the ground beneath her feet to propel herself high up in the air for faster travel.[3]

Trivia[]

  • "Carpe Diem" is a Latin aphorism, usually translated into English as "seize the day."[4] It originates from Book I of famed Roman poet Horace's Odes.[5]
