Introduction

Forêt d'argent ―Chance Encounter— is the thirteenth episode of the anime adaptation of Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas.
Synopsis[]
Vanitas and Noé travel to Gévaudan in search of a creature known as the Beast, but things go sideways when they encounter a murderous paladin, a hostile acquaintance, and an old nemesis. Will our heroes survive these threats, not to mention the Beast?
Summary[]
Noé writes to his Teacher, informing him that he and Vanitas are leaving Paris and heading to Gevaudan.
Dante and Johann want info from Noé
On their way, while riding in a wagon, Noé is quite excited of the view. Meanwhile, Vanitas is freezing and Dante makes fun of him. Vanitas wonders why the informants Dante and Johann are there and they reveal its because they are looking for information to collect and sell. They try to poke Noé about the Chasseurs, but he doesn't tell them anything. Vanitas tells Noé that its likely that they have other motives too, and that he wishes to go see the place where the bodies are found right after they reach the inn.
In the Silver Forest, Vanitas tells the story of the Beast and how many he killed, and that a witch with tremendous power is also dwelling in the forest. Noé asks Vanitas if he believes that the Beast is a curse-bearing vampire and as Vanitas confirms, Noé states that the curse-bearer and the witch may be connected. Walking in the forest, Noé is reminded of the time he spend with Dominique playing in the forests and sees tree nuts and heads to eat some. Dante comment that he expected Noé and Vanitas to go on separate ways. Vanitas reveals he tried doing that, but Noé followed him. Vanitas tells Johann to keep an eye on Noé as he will vanish the moment he isn't looking and Johann reveals he is correct and Noé had vanished. Meanwhile, Noé had dropped his hat which rolled downhill and he went after it. As he got it back, he realized he is alone with Murr and wonders if its due to the power of the witch.
The Beast appears
It suddenly starts to snow. Vanitas and the rest, see a group of soldiers and hide. They hear them talking about a trespasser claiming to be with the Church and that they were heading towards Monsieur Antoine to report it, but they commanding officer doesn't care and wish the find the Beast. Vanitas reveals those are dragoons, and that during the 18th century, King Louis XV ordered his dragoons to investigate sightings of the Beast, and Antoine was the name of the king's First Musketeer. Dante is surprised as that sound like they went back in time. They hear howling and see an enormous red wolf coming while knocking down trees, who then wipes out the dragoons. Vanitas and the rest run, with Vanitas trying to understand the situation and guesses its a malnomen. As the wolf catches to them, Jeanne appears and protects Vanitas.
Noé sees dragoons getting killed by a Chasseur. He swings at him, but Noé dodges. Seeing Noé, he recalls they met at the Paris station and introduces himself as Astolfo, the 12th Paladin, honored with the title of Garnet. Noé wonders why he killed the humans and Astolfo reveals they mistaken him for a woman and refused to listen to him. He warned them three times, but they still laid hands on him. Astolfo states that protecting humans isn't Chasseurs job, but hunting vampires and proceeds to attack Noé. As Noé dodges, Astolfo sees his red eyes and confirms that Noé is indeed a vampire. Seeing his face, Noé realizes that Astolfo enjoys the fight and is nothing like Roland and the rest. Astolfo then finished a human and that makes Noé angry and engages Astolfo in a fight, but is quickly defeated. As Astolfo is about to finish him, the Beast and Jeanne fight interrupts him and Dante and the rest save Noé.
Astolfo gets excited seeing the Beast and the Hellfire Witch, Jeanne. Noé gets up and wishes to fight Astolfo, but Vanitas stops him, stating he is formidable. Noé disagrees, staying that Roland is far stronger and terrifying, however Vanitas then wonders why Noé is so beat up and wonders if its because he didn't take him seriously as he looks like a woman. Vanitas decides to take over and acts shocked seeing a Paladin, wondering if the Roland the Jasper, but gets so glad its not and its someone who didn't heard of. He then mocks Astolfo for looking like a weak girl, but acts surprised he is a boy. That makes Astolfo angry, stating that Roland isn't better than him. Vanitas tells Noé to stop Jeanne and that they need to discover what malnomen is the Beast.

Noé stops Jeanne, telling her that Vanitas may be able to save the vampire, but Jeanne refuses to stop, saying its her job to slay the curse-bearers. Vanitas dodges Astolfo easily, continuing to mock him and reveals he got into Chasseurs due to his family, Astolfo Granatum. As the Church and House Granatum have strong ties, he must have begged his father to become a paladin, and makes Vanitas wonder how much a paladin seat costed. Hearing all that makes Astolfo even more angry. Naenia enjoys the situation and decides to join, starting Charlatan's parade. Naenia starts talking to everyone, Astolfo attempts to attack Jeanne, but Vanitas protects her. He takes out the book and attempts to use it, but a flying knife, cuts the book's chain from Vanitas and the book opens and starts to shine.

The fight had ended. A man picks up the book and approaches Chloé, who sits next to unconscious Noé. He tells her they should return to the castle, however Chloé tells him her leg hurts and asks him to carry her.
