Charlatan (シャルラタン, Sharuratan) is the major antagonistic group from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. It is an organization completely shrouded in mystery, with its full ranks, the identity of its members, the full scope of its powers, and even its true intentions and desires utterly unknown as of yet. They are the organization enabling Naenia and her spreading of Malnomen among Vampires, though for what reason remains in the dark. What little can be discerned about them shows Charlatan to be sinister in its goals, and dangerous for having influence within the Catholic Church and the Vampire Senate.
After several violent encounters over the course of their journey, Charlatan has made itself known to be an enemy to Vanitas and Noé along their journey to cure every curse-bearer they can find.
Overview[]
Charlatan is headed by August Ruthven, who partnered with Chasseurs, Gano, Monsieur Spider, the disgraced scientist Moreau, and the Vampire Queen Faustina, following the alteration of her own true name into the Malnomen Naenia — though the reason as to why is unclear beyond attempting to realize Vanitas of the Blue Moon's malicious intent for Vampires of the Crimson Moon. However, when the Beast of Gévaudan rears its head after one-hundred years, Charlatan works carefully to obtain the Core of the World Formula Alteration Device and its respective research, which had been under Chloé d'Apchier's protection for the last century. Despite bearing the power to summon the Parade of Charlatan, as well as alter the true names of Vampires, Faustina is not the leader of Charlatan, as she answers to Lord Ruthven and Monsieur Spider. Given Monsieur Spider's warning of the Beastia, it would appear as though Charlatan is unprepared to face Vampires capable of powerful World Formula alteration, thus being ineffective against the likes of Veronica de Sade, Marquis Machina, and Loki Oriflamme.
