Mémoire 58: Observation

Charles (シャルル, Sharuru), formally known as Charles of Diamond ( (こん) (ごう) (せき) のシャルル, Kongouseki no Sharuru), is a character from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. He is the First Paladin of the Chasseurs, a division of the Catholic Church dedicated to hunting down Vampires, possessing the high-ranking seat of Diamond.[1] Due to this, he is the acting commander for all Chasseurs and the superior to which Roland, Olivier, Astolfo, and Gano answer.[2]

Appearance[]

Charles is a young man with an androgynous appearance and a thin build, with pale skin and light blue eyes constantly framed by dark circles. His pale blond hair is styled very distinctively, a short cut with the two side bangs framing either side of his face left long enough to fall down past his waist. The strands of his hair are layered in such a way that they appear as feathers, like that of a bird or even an angel, with a singular lone strand sticking straight up at the crown of his head. His legs are both prosthetics specially made for him.

As a Chasseur Paladin Charles wears the standard black uniform with a number of notable additions that make his high rank apparent. Over his standard uniform Charles wears a hooded white robe with the blue ribbon most Chasseurs wear around their waists draping down his shoulders. Large black earrings consisting of a cross in the center of a circle, at the bottom of which is a small diamond, hang from his ears along with ribbed black ear cuffs. Hanging around his neck is his rosary, designed in a way far more distinct than any other Chasseur, even other Paladins, to signify his being first Paladin. His rosary is placed at the center of a diamond, with each inch of the cross decorated in diamond gemstones, the largest placed at the very center.

Personality[]

He’s shown to be quite calm and holds life in high regards. Most of the time Charles keeps a blank expression almost like someone who is trapped in an infinite daze.

Trivia[]

  • Charles is based off of Charlemagne, also known as King Charles the Great,[3] from The Song of Roland,[4] one of the three cycles of the Matter of France,[5] a body of literature containing legends that have defined the history of France. The Song of Roland tells the story of the Knights of Charlemagne, Roland and his comrades, fighting in the Battle of Roncevaux Pass, in which they eventually die honorable deaths. Charlemagne is the one to avenge Roland's death by executing Ganelon who had betrayed them to their enemies.
    • Charles shares this eponymic origin with all Chasseur Paladins.
