Powers and Abilities[]
Durandal has three known forms: spear, sword, and whip.
In spear form, Durandal is quite useful both offensively and defensively. Roland is shown spinning it around often, and its versatile form matches Roland’s versatile fighting style. It can be used as a javelin, but this is generally not a good idea as Roland has no way to quickly retrieve it. One drawback of spear form is that Roland must move in close to his opponent(s) in order for them to be in range for an attack. During his battle with Noé, Roland is often seen sprinting towards the man or jumping in close in order to get a hit.
In sword form, Durandal’s central staff splits into two sword hilts, turning the spear into two swords. The swords are able to easily meld into and out of whip form, making them both incredibly powerful as a way to surprise opponents and extending their range.
In whip form, Durandal’s dual swords extend into a chain of pieces of the swords. The dual whips created by the transformation take opponents off guard and extend Roland’s range considerably, one drawback of his spear form. One weakness of this whip form is that it seems to be slightly less durable than both sword and spear form, and therefore cannot be sustained forever during a battle with strong opponent(s). In other words, Roland doesn’t want to use whip form for a long time in a sustained battle as the sword may break.
Durandal can conduct electricity through its metal blades, but the hilt seems to be made of a non- conductive material.
Overall, Durandal’s use as a sword, spear, or whip matches Roland’s unconventional fighting style.

Trivia[]
- Roland is based off of the titular character of The Song of Roland,[1] one of the three cycles of the Matter of France,[2] a body of literature containing legends that have defined the history of France. In said chanson de geste, the main character wields a sword named "Durendal" or "Durandal,"[3] which is said to have once belonged to Charlemagne.[4]
