—Retrace XXVII: Get out of the pool |
Introduction
|
Elliot Nightray (エリオット=ナイトレイ, Eriotto Naitorei), sometimes called by the pet name "Elli" (エリ, Eri) is a supporting character from Jun Mochizuki's Pandora Hearts. The youngest child of the Nightray Dukedom, one of the Four Great Dukedoms, Elliot is a student at the prestigious Lutwidge Academy. He is nearly always accompanied by his valet and best friend, Leo. Due to the rivalry between the Nightray and Vessalius families, Elliot holds a strong resentment for those of the Vessalius Dukedom. Though Gilbert, Oz Vessalius's best friend, is Elliot's adoptive elder brother, the two are estranged, and Gilbert's testimony does not curry Elliot's favor for Oz.
The youngest of seven children by seven years, Elliot was babied by his elder siblings, including forbidding him from speaking to his adoptive elder brother, Vincent, for much of his early childhood. Despite this, he would come to acknowledge Vincent and Gilbert as his brothers, and the two cared for him in turn. Thus, while Elliot was deeply loyal to his family, he was less inclined to judge others by their noble status. When the time came for him to take a valet, he refused the service of any lower-ranking nobles, believing they valued him for his title. His elder brothers Ernest and Claude would take him to the House of Fianna, an orphanage run by Nightray, where he would meet his eventual best friend Leo.
Though Leo and Elliot had a rocky start, the two would become close friends, Leo agreeing to become Elliot's valet. A few months later, several children would be discovered missing while Leo and Elliot came to visit Leo's foster siblings. They would find the children dead, killed by the Chain Humpty Dumpty. Hit with a fatal blow, Elliot would be forced to form an Illegal Contract with the Chain, thus "forgetting" his wounds. Unaware of his contract or the true fate of the children, Elliot would return home with Leo, the reincarnation of Glen Baskerville. The first Headhunter murder would happen a while later, killing Elliot's eldest brother, Fred, and his uncle. Nightray would then turn against itself. Under his Chain's influence, Elliot would be forced to kill any threat to Leo then made to forget, resulting in the deaths of several of Elliot's own family members.
Appearance[]
Elliot has beige-colored hair and blue eyes. He also has 2 blue earrings (studs) in each ear. In his first appearance, he wore standard Lutwidge uniform. He keeps a blade with his family crest in a violin case.
Personality[]
Elliot Nightray is proud but compassionate and has a gentle core nature. As a younger brother of a very important family he understood the weight of duty very well. He is dedicated to his family's values but when confronted with an experience that challenges his prior knowledge, he is open minded enough to reassess what he has learnt to date.
He is self-less and understands the sacrifices that he needs to make to ensure the safety of others. Elliot is hotheaded, blunt and always forces his opinions on everybody else. Ada, however, thinks he is a nice and dependable person deep down. Leo also stated that "he is smart, yet he is still an idiot".
A lot of his experiences have tried to shape him to be harsh and unforgiving however a lot of what he does is compassion driven and is hidden under the veil of honor.
He first meets Oz in the Lutwidge library where they get into a fight over a character in the novel series Holy Knight (Elliot spoils the ending for Oz's favorite character, Edgar: that Edgar dies in an act of self sacrifice). He also hates the Vessalius family, a belief he inherits from his father. He also doesn't like Ada calling his name and despises how the Vessalius seem to get away with anything just because they were heroes 100 years ago. However, after learning more of Oz and his past, he decides to "judge everything with [his] own eyes". He now views things differently from before and accepts Oz's friendship.
When Gilbert and Vincent first came to the Nightray household, Elliot was told to stay away from them, for they were up to no good. With his previous personality, he tried to accept his brothers' wishes, but couldn't understand the reason. As a result of his curiosity, Elliot spent a lot of time with Gilbert and Vincent. As the years passed by, Elliot grows to accept them more each day, which in turn gains him respect from both of them. Though he seems to be greatly annoyed by Gilbert, in reality, he cares deeply for him as family.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Swordsmanship - Although he is not considered a superb swordsman, Elliot does consider this one of his strong points.
- Musical Instruments = He is well known for his skills at the piano (the picture of Elliot's ability in musical instruments illustrated by Jun Mochizuki in the Pandora's character chair in Volume 14), and especially this is shown in The Story of the Mutuality: Blue Rose in Pandora Hearts ~Caucus Race~ 2. Elliot also composes his own songs, which he has gifted to Leo and his mother.
Equipment[]
Elliot has a black bladed rapier of the Nightrays which given by his father, as his main weapon. Form of the black bladed rapier which Elliot held also had somewhat resemblance with Nightray Dukedom insignia/symbol. In addition, Elliot also completely unaware that his black-bladed rapier is also the Nightray Key to the Door in present form, and thus making Elliot also protecting the Nightray Key; until Vincent Nightray learned that the rapier held the Nightray Key sometime prior to Oz's second Coming of Age Ceremony. After Elliot's death, finally the black bladed rapier falls on Leo's hand as new Glen.
