Summary[]
Johann and Dante join Riche and sees that Vanitas is facing Jeanne. Jeanne asks Vanitas to hand over the book and she will let him live. Vanitas comments that he heard of how scary Jeanne was, but now she had fallen so low. Vanitas then introduces himself, stating that the Vampire of Blue Moon had passed on to him his name and book. Even though he is human, the Vampire of Blue Moon had fested on his blood and thus imbued him with some of his magic, making him part of the Clan of the Blue Moon. He wanted to avoid using this power, but has no choice. As Vanitas takes a stance, Jeanne starts to feel scarred. In that moment, a werewolf-like burst through the wall and bites Jeanne on the shoulder, while Vanitas states that it takes a monster to fight a monster and uses his book on Jeanne.
Dante and the rest realize that Vanitas was bluffing and was waiting for Thomas Berneux paralysis to go off. Jeanne is unable to move and Vanitas tells her to sit and watch. Vanitas turns towards Thomas and states that he takes the form of a wolf and haunt moonlit nights, seeking the living blood of young women, and his malnomen is Loup-Garou, "wolf who hunts crimson". Vanitas then opens the book and uses it, curing Thomas and returning his real name, Bucolicus, "he who composes idylls". Vanitas then realizes he made a mistake and had to cure him in front of Orlok, but Orlok's servants who where also secretly observing, tell him that they will inform Orlok of what happened. Jeanne manages to get up, which surprises Vanitas as he placed paralysis on her and Loup-Garou's poison should still be there. As Jeanne still intends to fight, Vanitas calls Noé, who then comes out of the shadow with Luca as hostage. Vanitas then threatens Jeanne that if she do something, Noé will break Luca's neck.
Noé recalls Vanitas' plan. Vanitas told him to capture Luca and keep him safe, as he will be creating an area that incapacitates vampires and will try to reason with Jeanne. But the power would be too much for the child, Luca, so Noé needs to keep him still and cover his mouth, so that he doesn't inhale Vanitas power. Noé needs to keep his distance, but they should still be close enough for Luca to see them. Thomas awakens and now knowing where he is or what is going on, starts to run. Jeanne admits defeat and asks Vanitas to not harm Luca. Realizing Luca is indeed Jeanne's weakness, Vanitas states that she became weak due to her desire to protect something, but he likes it. As he places his hand on her and uses his magic, Jeanne loses strength. Vanitas states he got intrigued by her and then proceeds to kiss her. Jeanne starts to blush as Vanitas keep saying he wishes to know her better and that he must had fallen in love. Luca gets angry and unleashes his power, causing Vanitas to take a step back. Jeanne immediately stands up and takes Luca. She promises that the next time they see each other, she will kill Vanitas, but that only makes him happy and it means she wants to see him again.
Orlok's servants find Thomas dead, wondering who did it. A shadowy figure leaving the scene is disappointed as it went thought the trouble of corrupting Thomas name and he still died. The figure then wonders on who's name to claim next.
The next day at Orlok's place, Noé and Murr are happy to see Amelia. Orlok doesn't believe everything he was told, but had decided to postpone Amelia's execution. However, he still wants to keep an eye on her and tells her she will work as live-in maid at Hôtel Chouchou. Orlok states that the book may indeed have some power and he doesn't intend to let Vanitas loose. Vanitas realizes Thomas must had been killed and they have no idea who did it, but is fine with Orlok using him to resolve cases with curse-bearers.
Vanitas ask Amelia if she had seen Charlatan. He explains that as he treated some of his patients, some realized that that before they became curse-bearers, they found themselves in a thick fog and there they saw the Parade of Charlatan. However, Amelia has no such memory. Orlok suggest that Noé exam her, revealing that he received a letter from Noé's teacher, that informs Orlok of Noé's fullname and asks Orlok to provide assistance to Noé. Manet wonders what Archiviste means and Nox explains its a clan with the power to read people's memories by drinking their blood. Amelia agrees to cooperate. Noé then bites her on the arm and drinks her blood. Noé manages to find the memory in which Amelia finds herself in a thick fog and the Parade of Charlatan begins. She attempts to run, but Charlatan catches up to her and takes her name. Noé tells everyone that he saw Charlatan and is sure that he corrupted her name, and wishes to may him pay.
A woman then enters the room, stating she heard the entire story and reveals that Noé is her fiance. Noé denies it and introduce her as Dominique de Sade, a childhood friend, and her attendant is Kreisler. Vanitas realizes she is teh daughter of the Marquis de Sade, Lord of Altus and comment he didn't knew Noé had connections in the nobility. Noé reveals that her grandfather is his teacher. Dominique apologizes for her entrance, but Orlok is fine with it as House de Sade's rude behavior predates her generation. Dominique then puts a chain on Noé's neck, stating she will borrow him for a bit and that he needs to escort her to a masquerade ball.
As they leave, Dominique reveals that Lord Ruthven will be there and there are rumors of him conduction his own research on curse-bearers. She takes him to the barrier, a product of an experiment gone wrong long ago, a spatial distortion linking this world to Altus, the vampires' world. As they enter the barrier, Vanitas comes running and joins them. As they go through, Noé says that humans shouldn't cross the barrier, but Vanitas states this isn't his first time and he learned he can cross it as long as he is touching a vampire. Dominique wonders why Vanitas came, and he states it because she wanted to separate him and Noé, which she confirms.
