Gévaudan (ジェヴォーダン, Jevōdan) is a location in Jun Mochizuki The Case Study of Vanitas. It is a forested, mountainous province located in south-central France, a day's train ride away from Paris. The region's relevance mainly lies in it being the home of the infamous Beast of Gévaudan and the location where its many murders took place. Over a hundred women and children died to the Beast during the eighteenth century, but despite the efforts of both Vampires and the Catholic Church alike to stop it, they failed and the Beast faded into legend. Until the late nineteenth century when it emerged once again with newfound bloodlust.
News of the Beast's return come to Vanitas and Noé's doorstep from the information broken Dante, along with the rumor that it may be in truth a curse-bearing Vampire. As a result, the two decide to travel from Paris to Gévaudan in the hopes of unraveling the mystery surrounding the Beast and saving the curse-bearer in question.

Notable Locations[]
Saugues[]
Saugues (ソーグ, Sōgu) is a small town in Gévaudan. Characteristic of being in the heart of a region such as Gévaudan, it is a quaint little village placed in a valley surrounded by mountainous regions with not much to its name. It is the settlement closest to the Silver Forest, which is infamous for harboring the "Silver Witch," and thus the inhabitants are rather insular in nature, with a tendency to be distrustful of newcomers. It is at this village that Vanitas, Noé, Dante, and Johann lodge and leave their luggage at while they investigate the Beast of Gévaudan incidents that have recently reemerged in the region.
Silver Forest[]
The Silver Forest (
It is in the Silver Forest where Vanitas, Noé, and their Dhampir comrades converge with the Chasseurs lead by Paladin Astolfo Granatum, and Jeanne as a Bourreau, in a violent encounter as all separate parties aim for the Beast of Gévaudan. The chaotic fight that ensues is disrupted by Naenia which causes all to become lost within the endless snowstorm of the Malnomen consuming the forest. Once Vanitas and Noé successfully save Chloé, the closed world dissipates and the Silver Forest returns to normal.

Other Locations[]
The land of "Gévaudan" as portrayed in The Case Study of Vanitas does not truly cover what had been the real area of Gévaudan, as it includes some locations outside of the region. To avoid confusion in readers by including a large number of location names, Mochizuki made the decision to write about Gévaudan with the definition as "the area of damage inflicted by the Beast of Gévaudan."[1] However other specific location names are occasionally used; these include Clermont-Ferrand,[2] Mende,[3] Le Puy,[4] and Les Hubacs.[5]

Trivia[]
- Gévaudan is directly based on the historical area of France that bears the same name. It has ceased to exist after the French Revolution.[6] Currently, the area that used to be Gévaudan now consists of the modern-day department of Lozère and part of Haute-Loire, as well as the Auvergne and south Dordogne areas of France.
- The village of Saugues is based directly on the real life location of the same name.[7]
- The d'Apchiers' Castle is based directly on its real life counterpart. The real Château d'Apcher was a feudal castle located in the town of Prunières, in the north of Gévaudan. It was the seat of the Marquis d'Apchier, one of the eight barons of Gévaudan. It was abandoned bit by bit during the 17th century.[8]
- The Château de Besques is also based directly on its real life counterpart. It was the main residence of the Marquis d'Apchier,[9] being passed down to the last descendant of the famous Apchier family. It was eventually abandoned, falling into ruin and disappearing over the years.[10]
