Gilles (ジル, Jiru) was a minor character from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. He along with Fred, Fanny, and Mina made up the group of childhood friends for Noé Archiviste and Louis and Dominique de Sade. They had all grown up in Averoigne together, the former four being children of a nearby small village and the latter three being from the castle of "The Shapeless One," Noé's teacher and the de Sades' grandfather. From young childhood to adolescence, the children would often play together in the forests around the castle and the secret base they had discovered together. Gilles was the elder brother of Fanny.

One day in their adolescent years, Mina would contract a Malnomen and become a curse-bearer. She was slated to be executed for such, and so the group of friends aside from Louis banded together to rescue and hide her in their secret base. This quickly went wrong. Mina went on a bloodthirsty rampage and immediately killed Fred. Before she could do more harm, Louis who himself contracted a Malnomen in exchange for strength killed her to protect Noé and Dominique. Louis himself then became lost to the Malnomen and killed Gilles and Fanny. Louis knowing his fate begged Noé to kill him as his final act of agency. Noé could not bring himself to, and Louis's grandfather arrived to behead his own grandson.
Appearance[]
Gilles was a young boy with pale skin, freckles, a round face, and either red or gold eyes. He also had short, spiky blonde hair styled back.
Personality[]
Gilles was a friendly boy from a village in Averoigne. He may or may not have been related to Fanny, as they both have blonde hair and freckles; and was good friends with her, Mina, Fred, Noé, Louis, and Dominique. Gilles can often be seen protecting Fanny.
History[]
Gilles and his friends Fred, Mina, and Fanny met Noé, Louis, and Dominique one day while exploring the forests of Averoigne. The group quickly became close friends and discovered a ruined cathedral that became their secret base.
One day, Gilles learned that his friend Mina was to be executed as a curse-bearer. Wanting to protect her, he and his friends (sans Louis) brought Mina to their secret base, which no adults knew about (unbeknownst to Gilles at the time, The Shapeless One knew the location of the base). Mina transformed into a Malnomen and slaughtered and drank from Fred, who had been standing next to Gilles.
Gilles and Fanny were knocked back by Mina’s transformation, and began to run. However, Louis quickly entered the cathedral, and after beheading Mina, he murdered and drank from both Gilles and Fanny.
