The House de Sade (サド
The House de Sade is the family of Dominique de Sade and her siblings, Antoine, Veronica, and Louis. Noé Archiviste is also a ward of the family, due to being the personal student of the founder.
Overview[]
The House de Sade is a well-known aristocratic family of Vampires with a reputation for being rude, frivolous, and hedonistic. They are known for acting rude even to other nobility,[1] several members have been through multiple casual relations be they sexual in nature[2] or not,[3] and even servants seem to be used to their "capricious" moods in which they abandon their responsibilities for whatever reason.[4] They also have an interest in sadomasochism and similar subjects, as they own a private box in an opera house filled with a variety of torture devices, used by multiple family members.[5] Despite their contentious reputation among their peers, the de Sades have a significant amount of power and influence within the Vampire political world, with all current members holding high and important positions in Vampiric society.
The founder of the House de Sade is known as "The Shapeless One," whose origins including his real name or his real age remain a complete mystery to all. Despite this he still has a significant amount of accomplishments and status, being the first Vampire to serve the Vampire Queen and the longest to have done so. The manner in which he treated his responsibilities however is clearly the reason behind the reputation of his family line. He did not take any kind of important position, and simply gave the title and territory he received from the Queen to his adopted child before retiring to live leisurely in the countryside of Averoigne.[6] His current activities, goals, and affiliations are unknown rendering him the most mysterious figure seen thus far.
The current true head of the de Sades is the Count de Sade. Little has been seen of him but he seems to reside in his own territory separate from the main de Sade residence in Altus, and is implied to have enough influence to potentially contest decisions made by the Senate.[2] The Count de Sade has three children, one son and two daughters, all from different mothers.[7]
The eldest son of the de Sades is Antoine de Sade. He is a Senator and the heir apparent of the House de Sade. He is manipulative and cunning to a great degree as seen in the way he treats his Senator position, all his actions regarding the Senate being deliberate and calculated the way a game of chess is.[2]
The eldest daughter of the de Sades is Veronica de Sade. She is a Beastia showing her close position to the Queen and significant power as a Vampire.[8] She also has a sexual relationship with Marquis Machina, though according to her their connection is nothing more than casual, and their personal meetings seem to also serve as exchanges of political information between the two of them.[2]
The youngest child of the de Sades is Dominique de Sade. She serves as a royal guard for Carbunculus Castle[4]; but aside from this, out of all current members of the de Sades Dominique has the least political power and influence, nor does she seem interested in being more involved in the political landscape of Vampire society. From Dominique's own admission even what experience she has in Vampire society is minimal, only being experienced with navigating relationships with women and has little to zero experience with men.[3] Dominique is considered to be the "failure" of the family, being condescended to by Antoine for her general powerlessness[2] and having endured outright verbal abuse since childhood from Veronica about how disappointing she is.[9] Despite this unstable relationship she has with her family and her personal insecurities as a result, according to the words of Luca Oriflamme, Dominique has much of her own merit and power that she can exert if need be and is plenty capable regardless of her position within the de Sades.[10]
In addition to the true members of the de Sade family, Noé Archiviste is a ward of the de Sades. As a child he had been placed for auction on the black market as an Archiviste Clan survivor, wherein "The Shapeless One," who would become known to Noé as "Teacher," bought him and brought him to his estate in Averoigne.[1] Since then he has been treated as a ward of the House de Sade and a student of the family's founder. He receives orders from his Teacher to travel to certain places and fulfill specific tasks, such as "finding the true character of The Book of Vanitas."[11] He also is given money—though how much or how often is unclear—which he tends to save up for necessities and emergencies.[12] He also has been close friends since childhood with Dominique after being introduced by his Teacher.[1] Aside from them, Noé has not been seen interacting with any other member of the de Sade family, so it remains unknown where he stands with the entire family.
Despite the outside appearance of the House de Sade of a family concerned with nothing but personal pleasure, they harbor dark secrets that the public is not privy to. The most prime example being this truth: the Count de Sade did not sire three children, he had four. The youngest, Dominique, was born a twin to Louis de Sade, but because twins are a symbol of bad luck to Vampires, their births would have ruined the family's reputation in higher society. The Count de Sade chose one twin to keep—Dominique, on no more than a spur-of-the-moment whim; and one to "discard," in other words kill—Louis. But the family's founder the Teacher declared that to be "wasteful" and took the abandoned infant with him.[9] Louis would then solely live with his grandfather in Averoigne under the guise of him having contracted an unknown "sickness." His family would treat him as if he were dead for his entire life. Despite said "sickness" never having existed at all, Louis would end up being deceived into contracting a Malnomen and dying painfully at the hands of his own grandfather.[13] His death would go on to haunt his twin sister Dominique and his close friend Noé for the rest of their lives.

History[]
The House de Sade was founded by "The Shapeless One", otherwise referred to as "The Teacher", who adopted Count de Sade and provided him a territory to govern over after he'd finished his lessons, whilst the Teacher remained in isolation within Averoigne.
Count de Sade would go on to have children of his own, with his eldest son, Antoine de Sade, growing to take a place among the Senate, while his eldest daughter grew to become one of Queen Faustina's Beastias, while also bearing a sexual relationship with Senate member, Francis Varney - better known as Marquis Machina.
Louis de Sade was born as a Curse-Bearer, and thus he was separated from the rest of his family shortly after his birth, being instead sent to live with his surrogate grandfather, so as to be studied. Louis excelled at ignoring Naenia's temptations however, and thus, he lived out much of his time without bearing a Malnomen.
Eventually, the Teacher found Noé Archiviste after his own surrogate family had been killed by Vampires and he was taken into the black market. After purchasing Noé, presumed to be the last of the Archiviste Clan, the Teacher allowed him to grow in close proximity to Louis de Sade while attending his studies.
Dominique de Sade is the youngest child of Count de Sade and was also allotted time to visit her surrogate grandfather and elder brother, Louis, who grew to become jealous of his younger sister because she was free to live as she chose, spending time both in Averoigne and among the rest of their family.
Tragedy befell the family when Louis de Sade gave in to Naenia after learning that Noé and Dominique had run away with their friends, Fred, Gilles and Fanny in a desperate attempt to save Mina, who had succumbed to being a Curse-Bearer and was meant to be beheaded by the Bourreau. While Mina had killed Fred, Louis arrives in time to kill Mina and save Noé and Dominique, but is unable to control his temptations and subsequently kills Gilles and Fanny. While Louis begged Noé to kill him, Noé couldn't bring himself to do such a thing, and was nearly killed by Louis himself, forcing the Teacher's intervention, at which point he beheaded his surrogate grandson.

Powers and Abilities[]
Given their position in close proximity to the Teacher, as well as places in both the Senate and at Faustina's side, the House de Sade hold a lot of sway in the Vampiric political world. As well, in addition to enhanced strength, speed, and stamina that come naturally to Vampires, the House de Sade have proven to be rather proficient when it comes to World Formulae alteration:
- Cryokinesis - the creation and manipulation of ice, as of yet having only been displayed by Veronica[8] and Dominique.[10] Antoine is said to have the same ability[10] but he has yet to display his powers.
- Anti-Gravity - a simple alteration, albeit the only one which the Teacher was able to successfully teach to Noé, allowing them to walk on walls and surfaces parallel to the ground.
- Shape-Shifting - an ability for which the Teacher is renowned for, he is constantly changing his appearance to suit his situations, having on one occasion taken on a monstrous form in order to behead Louis de Sade in order to protect Noé.

Trivia[]
- The de Sades are inspired by the real life Marquis de Sade,[14] He was a French historical figure infamous for his philosophical influence on sexuality and eroticism, to the point where the term "sadism" has been directly derived from his name and his writings.
- In Mémoire 12: Pause, Dominique says to Jeanne "'Acts of pleasure are the passion to which all others are subordinate.' I'm quoting my father." This is one possible translation of a quote attributed to the real life Marquis de Sade, usually translated as, "Sexual pleasure is, I agree, a passion to which all others are subordinate but in which they all unite." This confirms the fictional head of the de Sade family to be directly based on the Marquis de Sade.
