Noé —In the City of Flowers— is the second episode of the anime adaptation of Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas.
Synopsis[]
Vanitas and Noé are in a bind until an invitation arrives. At their benefactor's, they find they must prove the "Book of Vanitas" can restore a vampire's true name. They try to secure the necessary proof, only to encounter someone else after the book.
Summary[]
Noé Archiviste recalls a childhood memory with Louis de Sade, who asks him if he had heard of the curse-bearers, vampires who lost their mind and went berserk. As Louis accidentally cuts himself and licks his blood, he asks Noé if he still sees the blue moon as something beautiful even with a curse-bearer is in front of him.
Vanitas and Noé in jail
Noé wakes up in a cell with Vanitas, and wonders why are they there. Vanitas explains that Noé was poisoned by Amelia and had lost consciousness. Noé still can't understand why he is also in prison as Vanitas was the criminal, and Vanitas explain that he told the police that they were partners in crime. As Noé realizes his wallet is missing, Vanitas explain that all their belonging was confiscated including the Book of Vanitas. Noé gets upset wondering why Vanitas isn't worried as his master told him to assess the book's true nature. As Vanitas point out, Noé realizes that indeed his teacher was vague about it and didn't tell him to steal or destroy it. Vanitas wonders why Noé simply doesn't join him if he seeks the book and Noé realizes he simply dislikes Vanitas and taking orders from someone he dislikes is bad for his mental state.
Noé takes the book from Orlok
A guard comes and released Noé and Vanitas and hands them an invitation by Count Orlok. Vanitas offers to show Noé around and Noé agrees. As they go out of the police station, multiple colorful flower petals fly around and Noé is fascinated by the view. Vanitas comments that the invitation said that he has their belongings, both that were on them and on the air ship. While heading to Galerie Valentine, Noé keeps getting distracted by various things. Reaching the galerie, Vanitas comments that after the war with humankind, the vampires were forbidden to attack humans. Most left beyond the barriers, but some remained to live among the humans. The queen had appointed a vampire to maintain the balance between the vampires and the humans in Paris, and that is Parks Orlok. As Vanitas opens the door to Orlok's office, his servants point their claws at him stating that he should have knocked. Noé sees Murr and is happy that he is okay, but receives a face scratch by Murr. They see their belongings, but the book is missing. Vanitas tells Orlok that he wants the book and Amelia back. Orlok comments that curse-bearers cannot be allowed to live and they will eliminate her themselves. Noé disagrees and states that he saw Vanitas heal her using the book, but Orlok doesn't believe the book works. Vanitas laughs and guesses that he stole the book, but doesn't know how to use it. Vanitas reveals that he is trying to save the vampires, but they don't believe him. Noé recalls his childhood when Mina became curse-bearer and Louis told him that there is no other way than kill her. Angry, Noé kicks Orlok's desk and takes the book, proposing that he and Vanitas will capture the curse-bearer rampaging in the city and Vanitas will use the book in front of them. Orlok agrees and gives them a day.
Coming out of the galerie, they meet Dante, who then starts to argue with Vanitas as Vanitas blame him for leaving Amelia, wile Dante states him payment didn't require protecting the target. Vanitas reveals that he often works with Dante, but now has a new partner and he will no longer need him. Dante states its a shame as he just found the murderer and Vanitas quickly changes his mind and even bows at Dante. Dante gives them a bat that will lead them to his comrade who is tailing the killer. Noé takes Vanitas and head after the bat. Johann shows up and tells Dante that Lord Ruthven's bourreau is in Paris and he is likely after the book, which may lead to Vanitas' death.
Luca asks Vanitas to give him the book
While following the bat, Vanitas comments that Thomas Berneux is the killer, a vampire who came from beyond the barrier two months ago. As they reach him and see Thomas attacking Dante's comrade, Riche, Noé quickly immobilizes Thomas while Vanitas uses the book to paralyze him. Luca Oriflamme and Jeanne appear with Luca being impressed by Vanitas. While commenting it may be ill-mannered, Luca asks Vanitas if he can give him the book, but Vanitas refuses as it isn't a plaything for brats. Jeanne then gives a scary aura, surprising Vanitas and Noé. Luca believes that Vanitas is using the book the make more curse-bearers and wishes to destroy the book as there is someone dear to him that suffers the curse. Vanitas states he is a doctor and can examine that person, but Luca refuses to take him to his big brother. As the talk seems pointless, Jeanne attacks Vanitas but Noé saves him. Having no choice, Luca orders Jeanne to take the book. As she opens a coffin, Vanitas sees the Crimson Gauntlet inside and realizes she is Ruthven's bourreau and tells Noé to run. As they run, Vanitas explains that during the War, a 1000 vampires betrayed their kind and sided with humans, but a single bourreau had slain them all and its the one that wields the Crimson Gauntlet, the Hellfire Witch, Jeanne. As she managed to catch up with them, Noé pushes Vanitas out of the way and takes on her attack. Luca comes and tells Jeanne that she doesn't need to kill them as she is no longer bourreau, but his knight.
Jeanne killing the traitors during the war
Noé is injured, but managed to escape with Vanitas. Vanitas reveals that its true that the book can corrupt a vampires true name and that his treatment consists of restoring that name, so it all depends on the application. Noé comments that the potential of doing something and doing it are two different things and even if the book was created to exterminate the vampires, its undeniable fact that he used it to save Amelia. Noé wishes they return to Orlok quickly so that they can save Amelia. Vanitas states he figured a way to defeat Jeanne.
