“ | It's impossible to keep on living without hurting anybody, okay? | ” |
—Retrace XXIV: Elliot&Leo |
Introduction
|
Charlotte (シャルロット, Sharurotto), known more commonly by the pet name Lottie (ロッティー, Rottī) is a recurring antagonist from Jun Mochizuki's Pandora Hearts. She is the most prominent member of the villainous Baskerville Clan and a devoted follower of their master Glen. She acts very peppy and playful and teasing, especially in her interactions with Oz Vessalius and his friends. But despite her outward demeanor, her true nature is very sadistic and she will be as ruthless as needed to get what she desires.
Lottie's actual origins of where she was and who she had been before the Baskervilles are unknown. She was chosen by the Droplets of Golden Light and accepted into the Baskervilles' ranks shortly after Oswald had succeeded the role of Glen. Like the many other women who interacted with him, Lottie was infatuated with Oswald, her romantic feelings stacked on top of her predisposition to unquestioningly follow his every word. As his retainer, she observed firsthand from a distance the friendship Oswald had with Jack Vessalius after Lacie's execution. Then the Tragedy of Sablier came and destroyed that peace. Though she nor any of her comrades did not understand why, Glen ordered for a mass massacre of every human in the Baskerville estate, and none could defy him. The Baskervilles slaughtered all whom they could, the city of Sablier dropped into the Abyss, and everything was brought to terrible ruin.
Lottie emerged from the Baskervilles' Door to the Abyss almost one century after; four years before Oz escapes from the Abyss himself. After forcibly being part of a horrific widescale massacre, a disaster swept her away and she entered back into a world where everything she cared for had turned to dust. After this Lottie adopted her sadistic persona and threw every last part of her into reclaiming the Baskervilles' lost power. She would dedicate everything to restoring her master Glen to his former glory, regardless of who she hurt and how much she herself was hurt in order to find him once again.
Appearance[]
Lottie has long light pink hair with two strands parting at her forehead to frame her face, possesses a snowy white complexion, and full, rosy lips. She has a slightly deranged appearance because of the wildness in her eyes, which are the same shade of pink as her hair. Her eyes are fringed with long, black eyelashes. In the present she usually wears her hair down, with the exception of her brief appearance at the second Coming of Age Ceremony, when she shows up in a full gown with her hair pinned up for the occasion. She is officially considered to be the most alluring woman in the Pandora Hearts universe.
She is always seen wearing the Baskerville's blood red cloak, as is the custom for the group. What sets hers apart from the others' is that the draw strings are pink and end in pink pom-poms. She has also decorated the hem of her cloak with light pink bows and ribbons. Underneath her cloak, her usual outfit consists of a lowcut dark red corset with a frilled pink trim, paired with a black and pink ruffled skirt. She also wears a pair of stockings with suspenders and high heels, and a shirt collar choker around her neck. On her hands she wears a pair of light pink kid gloves, and her wrists and ankles have been shackled with broken cuffs.
In the past, her clothes were more wholesome and modest, compared with the provocative lingerie she currently wears. She could usually be seen in long, floor length dresses that were heavily frilled and decorated with ribbons and bows. She kept her hair pulled back from her face and pinned it up with roses and laces. She seemed very feminine and her choice of clothes indicates that she had a weakness for pretty things like butterflies and flowers. Her choice of clothing preceding the Tragedy indicates how innocent and effeminate she used to be before her time in Abyss, but it is also effective in showing us how different she has become.
Personality[]
Lottie is usually seen as peppy and bubbly on the outside, although underneath the surface, she can be very twisted. In the past she seemed to have a far more innocent character, and had better control over her emotions. She was uncharacteristically shy whenever she was around Oswald, and was presumably attracted to him, although it is unknown if he ever returned her feelings. During her time in Abyss, her crush developed into somewhat of an obsession, and she became hell-bent on bringing him back to life and releasing his soul using the Sealing Stones. Before the Tragedy she was quieter and seemingly more level-headed, although she had a quick temper and was wary of strangers, as seen when she first discovers Jack sneaking into the mansion.
Following her time in Abyss, however, Lottie's personality has warped and she is now more malicious and cunning than before. She can at times seem vivacious and fun-loving, and seems to enjoy teasing her enemies by flirting with them. She is extremely dangerous and has very little self-control, meaning she is susceptible to manic fits and has a sadistic streak to her personality. She cares little about her safety, because her regeneration capabilities make her almost invincible. She is bitter and unwilling to let go of the past, as shown through her treatment of Jack following his betrayal and the death of Oswald - although it later emerges that her hatred of him is justified, as Jack is not, in fact, the hero of the Tragedy as he led everyone to believe.
She has a fondness for cute things, as seen when Echo bribed her with a limited edition stuffed toy, and despite her warrior-like approach to her role within the Baskervilles, she retains some of her femininity - she is the only one out of the entire clan to "customize" their cloak, choosing to add ribbons and butterflies and other pretty things to hers. She likes roses, and can sometimes be seen wearing them in her hair. She possesses a nurturing side to her character which is rarely seen, as shown when she welcomes Lily warmly into their "family" and fusses over her like an older sister. She takes on a leadership role within the group, and is the most prominently seen Baskerville in the series so far. She is very intelligent, and cunning, being able to figure things out quickly and conceptualize the events around her. This leads her to be more individualistic, and makes choices that she really has conviction in.

Trivia[]
- "Charlotte" is the female diminutive of the name "Charles," which is a name found in English and French with an originic meaning of "free man."[1]
- Lottie's Contracted Chain Leon is directly based off the Lion, a character featured in Lewis Carroll's Alice Through the Looking-Glass[2] which is itself based off a traditional nursery rhyme.[3] The Lion historically is in constant conflict with the Unicorn, an aspect which is reflected by Lottie's continuous clashes with Sharon, Contractor of the Chain Equus.
- Her likes are, in order, Oswald and cute clothes. She dislikes Jack.
- Her skills include knives, whips, and cooking. She has no particular weaknesses.
- Mochizuki's comment on her is, since the final stages of the story couldn't afford the time and space for it, there was unable to be a scene of her in giddy high spirits similar to her debut scene, which she finds unfortunate.
- Lottie has no known birthday or blood type.
- Lottie is the most beautiful girl in Pandora Hearts. (As said by Jun Mochizuki)
