A Mark of Possession (
Thus far all Marks of Possession seen have been placed solely on humans. While Vampires routinely exchange one another's blood as well in acts of intimacy, it is unknown if it is possible or acceptable to place a Mark of Possession onto another Vampire.
Plot[]
Bal Masqué Arc[]
In response to Dominique de Sade's accusation that he worshiped the Vampire of the Blue Moon, Vanitas announced his presence as a human at Marquis Machina's bal masqué in Altus Paris and revealed a Mark of Possession located on his right forearm. The Mark, resembling a discolored, cracked web with an eight-pointed star at its epicenter, was proof of his kinship to the Blue Moon vampire. This revelation drew the repulsion and ire of the Crimson Moon vampires at the bal masqué, and they immediately called for his death.[1]
Later, Vanitas would compel Jeanne to succumb to her impulse to drink blood by offering himself as her prey.[2] While she drank from him, Jeanne unconsciously left her Mark of Possession at the right base of his neck. The Mark resembles a rose in bloom, laying upon a nest of six thorns.[3]
The Beast of Gévaudan Arc[]
Upon learning that Chloé d'Apchier's alteration device was powered by a special form of Astermite resembling that found in The Book of Vanitas, Vanitas used his Mark of Possession left by the Vampire of the Blue Moon to revive the device and stabilize Chloé's existence.[4] This act would cause the Mark to spread and encompass his entire right hand. In the aftermath, Vanitas recalled Luna's warning that continuing to use the power granted by the Mark would slowly cause Vanitas himself to be overwritten.[5]
At some point, Astolfo Granatum had thirteen Marks of Possession on his body, obtained while he and his sister were held captive by vampires and used as prey. By the time he was sent to Gévaudan, only five Marks remained.[6]
