Mémoire 4: Femme Fatale

Introduction

Naenia (ネーニア, Nēnia) is a major antagonist from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. She is the mysterious ethereal entity responsible for infecting curse-bearing Vampires with Malnomen in a hunt for their True Names.[1] She is a member of Charlatan, who help facilitate her creation of curse-bearers to yet unclear ends.[2] As her goal and very existence is in direct opposition to that of Vanitas and Noé, who fight to cure curse-bearers, she and they remain in constant conflict for the duration of the series.

Naenia's true identity is Naenia, She Who Harbors Death (死を囲うもの (ネーニア) , Shi wo Kakou Mono ― Nēnia), the Malnomen of the first Vampire of the Crimson Moon, Queen Faustina. The circumstances surrounding the Queen's transformation into a curse-bearer and the nature of her Malnomen remain unknown, aside from the fact that it―that is, she as Naenia is the prevalent source behind the spreading of Malnomen among Vampires.[3][4]

Appearance[]

Naenia is a shadowy entity with glowing eyes, one of which is cracked beyond repair with fractures. Her mouth is curved in a thin smile and her body is dark, wavering, and unstable, splattered with particles of white energy.

When her existence is stabilized, Naenia becomes a young woman with large, round eyes and long white hair.

Personality[]

Naenia is a malicious entity with no regard for the sanity or safety of those around her. She appears to be single-mindedly pursuing her goal of hunting for true names.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Mind Manipulation - Naenia can enter a vampire's mind, reading through their memories to convince them to give her their true names. In order to do this, Naenia can show both vampires and humans vivid visual and auditory hallucinations of their worst fears and greatest desires.
  • True Name Alteration - Naenia is capable of altering the true names of other Vampires, thus afflicting them with some form of Malnomen.

Relationships[]

Noé Archiviste[]

Naenia sees Noé as a powerful but ultimately beatable plaything. Noé in turn despises Naenia for her torment and possession of Louis, which led to his death.

Thomas Berneux[]

Naenia was responsible for the corruption of Thomas Berneux and his transformation into the Malnomen Loup Garou. Naenia influenced his mind towards destruction, and can be assumed to have asked him for his true name, after which she altered his state of being. As a member of Charlatan, he was one of the many victims she encountered, and therefore, not notable to her.

Louis de Sade[]

Chloé d'Apchier[]

Naenia sees Chloé as a plaything and a tool. She initially believes that she has control over Chloé, but it is revealed that Chloé was merely using Naenia in order to hopefully trap and murder her, as revenge for messing with Jean-Jacques. This trap fails and Naenia escapes Chloé’s grasp.

Trivia[]

  • "Naenia" is an alternative form of the Latin word "nēnia" which has three possible translations into English. One, a funeral song or a dirge. Two, a spell, incantation, or enchantment. Three, a song of little consequence, ditty, tune, or lullaby.
    • "Naenia" is also the name of an ancient funeral deity of Rome, known more commonly as Nenia Dea, in English Goddess Nenia.[13]
    • "Naenia" is also the name of a genus of moths.[14]
  • Naenia's true identity as the Malnomen of the Queen of Vampires Faustina is inspired by Faust,[15] a classic German legend in which titular character Faust is a successful man who is dissatisfied with his life, and thus makes a deal with the Devil to exchange his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures.
  • Her Japanese voice actress previously provided the voice of Flower Girl from Pandora Hearts.
