Summary[]
Moreau welcomes his guests
Vanitas is happy to see Moreau and explains that the people with him are his supporters and wanted to join him after he told them about Moreau. Moreau is happy to hear that, otherwise he had to kill them. Moreau steps aside to prepare things to entertain his new guests. Vanitas tells Noé that if the doctor is excited, he will end up spilling more information that they didn't even ask, like what happened to the vampires or if he is behind the abductions. After that, either the Chasseurs will have him, or he will slay him.
Sitting around the table, Moreau reintroduces himself. Roland asks him why is he researching vampires and Vanitas quickly joins the conversation explaining that such vital information should be obtained from the source. Flattered, Moreau then explains he wish to become a vampire. Originally he helped the church due to intellectual curiosity, but soon got interested in vampires and couldn't stop thinking of how to become one. The church found him crazy and he hates it for wasting so much of his time. It became quite difficult for him, when the Vanitas of the Blue Moon attacked his laboratory and stole his children. As his laboratory was destroyed, the church learned about his secret research and Moreau was almost killed. Vanitas apologizes for what happened, but Moreau hugs him, stating it wasn't his fault and he was an excellent subject, cooperating with each experiment and never complained. Moreau wonders if he came back to keep assisting him with his research and Vanitas confirms. After he heard about the abductions, he realized he must have been trying to complete his work. However, Vanitas wonders if it isn't dangerous being alone that close to the Chasseurs. Moreau giggles, stating that its not a problem since he have certain exalted personage on his side now. Thanks to him, he was saved and able to continue his work. Moreau refuses to name the person and shows them freshly harvested vampires eyes. Moreau then wonders if Vanitas eyes color had changed and sees they have become from dark blue to light blue, and wonders if its due to the power by the Vampire of the Blue Moon. Moreau gets quite interested and wishes to take one of the eyes for study.
Moreau saved by Spider
Unable to take it anymore, Noé grabs Moreau, telling him to not refer to people as numbers and slams him to the ground. Moreau then sees his red eyes and realizes he is a vampire. Moreau men then come, but the Chasseurs start fighting them. Vanitas questions Moreau who is the exalted person, but Moreau is interested in Noé and wonders from where he came and if he can dissect him. Monsieur Spider then comes and saves Moreau, telling him he must destroy his lab now. Noé recognizes Monsieur Spider as one of the Charlatan. As the last abducted curse-bearer awakens and starts knocking on a door, Moreau and Spider prepare to escape, Moreau asks Vanitas what happened to Number 71, as he was quite attached to him and the Vampire of the Blue Moon took them both. Recalling Number 71, Vanitas freezes. The curse-bearer then knocks the door down and attacks Moreau's men. Vanitas states its the malnomen Predateur, "the shadow", that devours all life in front of him. Vanitas tells Noé that they need to take the curse-bearer out of here, however, the shadow attacks him and knocks him out.
Noé and Vanitas inside the shadow
While unconscious, Vanitas dreams of Number 71, who asks him why is he putting himself in danger to help the vampires, after they exiled their "father". Vanitas then awakens and tells Noé to take the Chasseurs outside and that the shadow will disappear once it consumes the curse-bearer within. He doesn't believe he can save him, as he doesn't know how to pry a curse-bearer out of a shadow. However, Noé refuses to give up and wonders whats within its maw, explaining that if they can't do anything from the outside, they will go inside. Vanitas finds that crazy and that they will die, but after a reminder from Noé at his reasons for being there, he decides to try. With the assistance of the Chasseurs, the two jump into the shadow's mouth. They find themselves in a long space tunnel and see the curse-bearer at the end. As they fight him, Vanitas uses the book and manages to return him to normal, destroying the shadow. The lab then starts to explode and they manage to escape in time.
Olivier guessing Roland did something again
Seeing a child with Noé, Roland assumes its one of the abducted vampires and asks Noé to hand it to him. As the vampires were not at fault, he intends to return all the abducted vampires back to Count Orlok, however, since Noé and Vanitas entered Chasseurs territory without permission, they need to leave immediately, or they will be captured. Roland then hugs them and wish to meet them again. As they leave, Olivier comes to Ronald wondering what had Roland done to cause all this tremor. Roland tells him he will file a detailed report, but shares that he befriended a vampire, which shocks Olivier. Olivier tells him that if others learn about this, he will be chased out. Roland knows, but states he saw something magnificent, a human and vampire laughing together. He was taught that the species will never understand each other, but his "common sense" was so easily overturned, and wonders what to do.
Vanitas and Noé manage to escape the catacombs. Noé believes that Vanitas didn't want to get involved in this situation, but did it anyway due to a curse-bearer being involved. He believes it wasn't due to his duty as a doctor, but like a crutch he was leaning on. He then wonders if its Vanitas who seeks salvation the most.
Monsieur Spider reports to August Ruthven, telling him that Moreau won't be useful for a while and its all Noé's fault. Ruthven states that Noé will now have to deal with him.
