Mémoire 22: Hurler

Introduction

Olivier (オリヴィエ, Orivie), formally known as Olivier of Obsidian (黒曜石 (こくようせき) のオリヴィエ, Kokuyouseki no Orivie) is a character from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. He serves as a Chasseur Paladin for the Catholic Church, and thus has considerable experience hunting and killing Vampires. It was Olivier who originally recommended Roland Fortis to serve as the Paladin of Jasper, but unlike him, he seems to have no care for the humanity of Vampires either way.

Appearance[]

Olivier is a slim, pale skinned man of average height. He has a thin, angular face, narrow, upturned eyes with long eyelashes, and defined eyebrows. His hair is long and dark, remarked to be "smooth and shiny" by Roland, usually kept in a loose ponytail and falling to about the space of his hips. While he does not have bangs, hair falls into the left side of his face, frequently covering one eye. Somewhat jocularly, he refers to himself as "handsome," earning immediate agreement from Roland.

He wears the standard chasseur's uniform, including black pants, a cassock, a pale harness, a ribbon-like belt, dark leather boots, and a rosary. His hands are protected with dark, scaled, armored gloves.

Personality[]

Olivier is high-strung due to the constant agitation he has from Roland's impropriety as a Chasseur. He is quick to anger towards Roland and is constantly frustrated at his inability to temper Roland's willfulness, despite his deep understanding of and trust for his friend. Olivier likes things to be done quickly and efficiently, with little patience for those who don't follow instruction. He tends to be fairly judgmental of those who don't act in ways that he sees reasonable or intelligent. However, he is generally polite and well-mannered (albeit quiet) with those that he doesn't know well.

Olivier can be a tad narcissistic and prideful at times, and is quite popular with the ladies and gents. He's extremely intuitive and intelligent, and while he may not be particularly emotional, Olivier is able to account for other people's emotions when he approaches issues, especially those relating to Roland. As much as he gets frustrated, he is also extremely loyal and is quick to support, extend trust to, and defend those he holds close to him.

Plot[]

Hunters of the Dark Arc[]

Olivier first arrives on- scene after Roland helps Vanitas and Noé escape from the Chasseurs’ compound. Olivier, having felt the quake that occured while the group was fighting Moreau and his malnomen, asks Roland what trouble he caused this time. Roland delightedly tells Olivier that he saw a human and a vampire being friends, laughing together, and genuinely enjoying each other’s presence. Roland states that it‘s changed the way he sees the world.

Olivier tells Roland to not tell anyone else about his newfound discovery.

Return of the Beast Arc[]

Olivier hunts down Roland Fortis in Mira's laboratory, and finds him investigating vampiric history in her library. After learning about Roland's change of heart towards vampires, Olivier warns him about the possible consequences to his family should their superiors discover his newfound beliefs. In response, Roland threatens the Chasseurs and Olivier, to the latter's annoyance.

Powers & Abilities[]

- Hauteclaire : Olivier’s primary weapon, Hauteclaire is a unique blade with an appearance similar to a non- rotating chainsaw. Olivier is quite skilled with it, but fights in such a brutal way that it is frequently blunted or broken.

Relationships[]

Roland Fortis[]

22 frustration

Olivier, irked once again.

Roland and Olivier are close friends and they have known each other for 10 years. Olivier originally recommended Roland for the position of Jasper in an attempt to curb his irresponsibility; however, he is dismayed by Roland's continual flippancy and his lack of regard for his position. Until Roland was assigned to his own unit, he was Olivier's vice-captain. While Roland shifts perspective on his view of vampires, Oliver discourages his new discoveries, as they can harm his position in the Church as part of the Chasseurs. Roland largely ignores his warnings, believing that if the Chasseurs make a threat, he will be more than capable to take them on, including Oliver himself. Roland cares very much about Olivier's well-being, going as far as to get almost fatally wounded in order to protect him, and Olivier seems to share the sentiment, staying by his bedside and stating that he was planning to leave the Church if Roland didn't wake up.

Astolfo Granatum[]

Olivier seems to view Astolfo as a younger brother who’s more trouble than he’s worth. However, there’s no questioning the fact that Astolfo respects Olivier far more than his colleague Roland.

Gano[]

Olivier seems to dislike and distrust Gano, not even bothering to greet him when he shows up. Olivier is well aware of Gano's tendency to cause trouble and has little to no patience for his antics. After the tragedy that befell Astolfo's family, Olivier was infuriated with Gano's mean comments and lack of empathy, grabbing Gano by the collar and being ready to start a physical fight in order to shut him up.[2] It is likely that Gano dislikes Olivier just as much, considering he is the best friends of Roland, the man he despises the most.

Quotes[]

  • “Strictly speaking, what that man believes in isn’t ‘God.’ It’s ‘himself,’ as a follower of God.”[3]
  • “If this gets dragged out any longer, even we won’t be able to protect them all. When the time comes—don’t hesitate.”[4]
  • “Hatred can keep people alive… and for some, clinging to it is the only way to survive. Don’t take that from him.”[5]

Trivia[]

  • Olivier is based off of one of the Knights of Charlemagne from The Song of Roland,[6] one of the three cycles of the Matter of France,[7] a body of literature containing legends that have defined the history of France. In particular, Olivier is based off Oliver,[8] who is the titular character Roland's closest friend and confidant and who, despite his urging to call for help in the Battle of Roncevaux Pass, ends up dying by Roland's side.
    • Olivier shares this eponymic origin with all Chasseur Paladins.
  • Olivier shares a character song with Roland, Na mo Naki Michi, sung by their Japanese voice actors and composed by CHI-MEY.
