The Oriflamme Dukedom (オリフラム (こう) (しゃく) () , Orifuramu Koushaku-ke) is a noble family from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. It is the highest authority in Vampire society aside from the Queen. Despite its incredible status however, the current member who is arguably the most powerful is the youngest member, the child Luca Oriflamme, placing the family at something of an odd position. Therefore until Luca turns of age and inherits his role as head of the family proper, all his duties and all powers of the Oriflammes are handled and possessed by his uncle August Ruthven, one of the most notable figures in Vampire history who had been adopted into the family during the apex of the War.

Overview[]

The Oriflamme Dukedom has the most authority and ruling over Vampire society as seen thus far, second only to the Vampire Queen herself. They are ruled over by the current Grand Duke Oriflamme, Lucius "Luca" Oriflamme. His position as Grand Duke means he works as a close advisor to the Queen and can exercise the most power aside from her. However, due to Luca's young age, he has not yet officially presented as Grand Duke and only holds the title in name.[1] All his duties are managed by his guardian and adoptive uncle August Ruthven. Luca being so young yet holding so much power means he is in an especially vulnerable position. His life has been targeted[2] before[3] due to (presumably) his position[1], and though he sits in on Senate meetings as Grand Duke his fellow Senators would scorn him as a mere child and a puppet.[4] However despite his limitations keeping him from the full scale of his position, he still has more authority than anyone else around him; as exemplified when in said Senate meeting Luca had raised his voice and prevented the rest of the Senate from trying to dispose of his chevalier.[4] Luca has also been seen by the bedside of the Queen while she is, for a yet undisclosed reason, bedridden and unresponsive.[1]

Due to the extraordinary amount of danger his position places him in, Luca is appointed a chevalier to follow, serve, and protect him at all times—this being Jeanne. Though she did not start out with this position, Jeanne has served the Oriflammes for a significant amount of time. She began as a Bourreau under the control of the Senate and being ordered to kill the Beast of Gévaudan immediately after her appointment as such. When she failed in this task, the Senate made to dispose of her, only for Ruthven—her and her parents' former teacher—to take over ownership of her and put her to sleep for an uncertain amount of time, many years on end.[5] However recently she has been reawakened and assigned to serve as Luca's chevalier to protect his life. After Ruthven's actions regarding Gévaudan antagonized his fellow Senators, Jeanne was taken away from his ownership and given fully to Luca, as well as being given the opportunity to ascend from Bourreau to an official chevalier with enough merit.[4]

Though his younger brother has inherited the title of Grand Duke and holds more power, Loki Oriflamme remains in relatively high position among Vampirekind as well, directly serving the Queen as a Beastia. However his activity is heavily restricted as at all time he is shackled and caged within Carbunculus Castle. Loki is a curse-bearer, which is a possible reason for his constant imprisonment, and according to Ruthven's words and vehement rejection of salvation for Loki,[1] it remains in question whether his contracting of a Malnomen was by his own choice, by simple chance, or by deliberate design of another.

Though he is not an Oriflamme by blood, August Ruthven remains to be the most active and arguably most authoritative of all current members. He is the guardian of Luca, thus handling all of the young Grand Duke's duties on his behalf due to the boy's age, and is a long-serving member of the Senate due to his position in the Oriflamme family. Hundreds of years ago, Ruthven was adopted into the Oriflammes by the then Grand Duke and used his authority to arrange a relatively peaceful armistice between Vampires and humans, putting an uneasy end to the war between the two races.[6] To the current day he continues to be admired, lauded, and revered as a hero to both humans and Vampires, being the central figure behind the peace between the races[1] and an essential part of Vampire history.[7]

Powers and Abilities[]

The Oriflamme Dukedom, with one of its members being the Grand Duke, another member being a Beastia, and the most active member a renowned hero of the war, is the most powerful family seen thus far in Vampire society. All current members directly serve the Vampire Queen and themselves hold very high positions and authority that outclasses all other Vampiric nobility seen. They are unmatched when it comes to political influence in the Vampire world.

In addition to enhanced strength, speed, and stamina that come naturally to Vampires, current members of the Oriflammes commonly have the ability to rewrite the World Formula in the same manner.

  • Pyrokinesis — the creation and manipulation of fire. Demonstrated by Luca, bursting out in a surge of regular flames when angered,[8] and Ruthven, manipulating black flames in a controlled an precise manner that can melt ice without harming another.[9] Ruthven has displayed the most expertise regarding this skill, able to both control his flames in a very restrained manner, and render Vanitas, Noé Archiviste, and Jeanne all completely defeated in a manner of moments.[1]

Trivia[]

  • The Oriflamme was a pointed, blood-red banner flown from a gilded lance serving as a war flag for the King of France in the Middle Ages. In French, the term "oriflamme" has come to mean any banner with pointed ends, by association with the form of the original. The term derives from Latin, aurea flamma, which translates to "golden flame" in English.[10]
    • The Oriflamme first originated from the epic poem The Song of Roland, which is the direct inspiration for major characters of the Chasseurs such as Roland and Olivier.[11]
