Summary[]
Jeanne wishes to return to the bench as she forgot her hat and parasol and they were selected by Dominique for her, but Vanitas refuses as the Chasseurs could be already there and decides to escort Jeanne to the barrier. As Jeanne is a bit surprised, Vanitas wonders if she intended to stay with him until the morning, but she denies it, explaining she can't leave until she fulfills her original objective. Vanitas tells her she already confirmed that she loves him, but Jeanne denies it, explaining she done all of this so that she don't have to see him again and pretended to be in love with him. Vanitas laughs, commenting he found that side of her quite lovely, causing Jeanne to blush.
Vanitas is surprised that Luca let her come, but seeing Jeanne reaction, he realizes she didn't tell him. Jeanne tells him that Luca is with his older brother and she was told to take a day off and received permission to see Vanitas. Vanitas then realizes she received permission by August Ruthven and starts running back to Noé, but finds him asleep on his bed.
Earlier as Ruthven bites Noé, he orders him to swear to him that one time he will obey his command, no matter what it may be. As Noé falls under his spell, he swears and black collar appears on his neck and then loses consciousness. Monsieur Spider wonders why Ruthven didn't kill Noé and Ruthven explains that he changed his mind and wants to know why the Shapeless One ins keeping an Archiviste by his side and until then Noé could be an useful pawn.
At present, Noé is surprised he slept all day and wonders why Vanitas is out of breath. As Vanitas didn't return, Jeanne wonders if she can leave. Ruthven then appears, explaining he had some urgent things to deal with, but heard a vampire appeared and wonders if it was Jeanne. Jeanne confirms, but explains she didn't harm anyone.
Olivier heard that Roland Fortis had been sneaking out lately and went to find him. Roland comments that he was reading book on the history between humans and vampires, but haven't read any of the forbidden tomes. He always thought the vampires are pure evil and had no grounds to question it. Olivier recalls previous conversation with Georges, who tells him that Roland is deeply faithful and won't do harm to the Church. Olivier then explains that Roland doesn't believe in God, but in himself as one of God's faithful. Olivier then tells Roland that he is a vampire hunter and if their superiors learn what he is saying, he will be deemed dangerous, and even his parents and siblings may be harmed. Roland then wonders how many paladins he can fight at the same time. He believes its three or four, maybe a bit more, but it would be hard fighting Olivier. Roland can only believe in what which he believes to be true. Olivier realizes Roland threatened him, but knowing what kind of man he is, he gives up on persuading him to change his mind.
Dante goes to the hotel to speak with Vanitas, who is surprised that Dominique isn't with him. Dante tells him he got some unbelievable info, and tells him the Beast lives, the Beast of Gévaudan. Meanwhile, Olivier and Roland find a document talking about the Beast of Gévaudan. Said to be resembling an enormous wolf, its large maw is twisted and its ears pointed, it had sharp claws and body covered in red fur with black stripes upon its back. In the 18th century regions of Auvergne and Gévaudan, a 100 women and children were brutally ripped to shreds. Dante comments that there are all sorts of theories of what the Beast really was, but back then both the Church and vampires agreed that the Beast was a curse-bearing vampire. Dante isn't sure if this is the same beast, but they have found five bodies so far, some devoured, some with heads torn off. Vanitas decides to go and see if its really a curse-bearer and wonders what will Noé do. However, Noé's been distracted by Vanitas' blood as it smells delicious and says he will think about it and that it sounds delicious. Noé figures that he haven't eaten all day as he slept and that must have made him more thirsty. He starts hearing his inner thoughts saying he needs to try Vanitas' blood. He recalls time with his Teacher and Louis, who tells him that since he is Archiviste, he needs permission first before drinking the blood of someone. Noé compliments Vanitas' blood and asks if he can drink it. Vanitas tells him that if he attempts to suck his blood and peer into his memories, he will kill Noé. Vanitas and Dante then leave. Noé comments that he didn't wish to see his memories, but then as he recalls some past moments with Vanitas, he wonders if that's truly the case.
In the morning, Vanitas returns and he and Noé leave the hotel. While walking, Noé apologizes and explains that he can't guarantee his desire to drink his blood isn't subconsciously related to wanting to see his memories. He doesn't know what he will gain from drinking his blood, but he is intrigued by Vanitas. Vanitas wonders if his power works no matter the source. Noé explains that it only works if he drinks the blood directly from the veins. With other sources, in rare cases he may only see fragments of emotions. Vanitas then allows him for one time only, when he gets injured that he can drink his blood from his clothes. Noé gets excited, but Vanitas tells him he is joking and starts laughing. The two then get on a train to Gévaudan. Noé feels sleepy as he didn't sleep all night, worried that Vanitas may leave him behind. Vanitas promises to wake him up when they arrive and tells Noé to get some sleep.
In a snowy forest in Gévaudan, a vampire hugged by Naenia states the time has come for her vengeance.
