Introduction
|
Sharon Rainsworth (シャロン=レインズワース, Sharon Reinzuwaasu) is a supporting protagonist from Jun Mochizuki's Pandora Hearts. A daughter to one of the Four Great Dukedoms, she first meets the protagonist Oz Vessalius at his Coming-of-Age Ceremony when she was thirteen years old. When they meet again ten years later, she has Legally Contracted with Equus and joined Pandora. However, her Contract strains her body such she has not visibly aged since she and Oz first met. With Xerxes Break as her retainer, she represents the Rainsworth Dukedom.
About fifteen years prior to Oz's escape from Abyss, Sharon discovered a wounded man outside of the Rainsworth Door to Abyss. This man would call himself Xerxes Break, but would refuse to reveal his past and remained hostile to Sharon and her family. Despite this, Sharon's mother, Shelly Rainsworth, took the man in as a servant and sought to rehabilitate him. As time passed, Sharon would come to know this man as her older brother, despite their lack of blood relation. The two of them would stay together even after Shelly's death, Break becoming deeply protective of her.
At some point around the age of thirteen, Sharon would contract the Chain Equus. This stops her body from outwardly aging, though Sharon's mental development continues as normal. As such, Sharon struggles with being perceived as a child, both romantically and by Break. Despite being a legally recognized contractor and member of Pandora, she would not be allowed to fend for herself and is assumed to be weak of heart. She could not form romantic relationships, her condition barring her from meeting others in society. Thus, she attempts to adopt the role of an elder sister to Alice, whom she attempted to guide towards romance, though this is to no avail.
Appearance[]
Sharon is a beautiful young woman who is described to be lovely and graceful (by Oz Vessalius) with waist-length caramel hair that it usually tied back in a ponytail by a red ribbon with bangs hanging over her forehead, cranberry-pink eyes, she is about 157 cm (5'2") and she looks much like her mother Shelly Rainsworth where she had the same blue highlights as Shelly when she was younger.
She is usually seen wearing Victorian style dresses with high-heeled shoes. Unlike the other characters, she does not have a constant outfit as she is shown in several different wardrobe changes.
She appears to be 13 years old, but she is in fact 23 years old and her appearance does not change from her first meeting with Oz to after he came out of the Abyss because she made a Legal Contract with a Chain, Equus.
Personality[]
Sharon is a kind, gentle, calm and trustworthy young woman who is very ladylike and smiles most of the time, but she can be serious, especially in battles and has both beauty and brains. However, it is also noted that she can be very intimidating, as seen when she threatens Alice to call her "Sharon-oneesama" (big sister Sharon) and when she beats up Oz and Break with a harisen fan. She shows some weakness in dealing with emotions, but eventually powers through and deals with situations logically, with tenacity as well as belief.
She seems to be very protective of Xerxes Break, as the two have a very close bond with one another; she was the one who discovered Break in a fatal condition after he came out of the Abyss. When she was young, she used to call Break 'Xerxes-niisan' that he became a big brother figure to her.
After a certain point, Sharon seemed to become oversensitive towards the fact that she was not very useful during battles and was entirely reliant on the power of Equus. Since this point, Sharon has insisted repeatedly on helping more with missions, although she is usually disregarded. By the end of the story, she has become much more powerful, both in emotion and strength.
Powers & Abilities[]
Chain[]
- See More: Equus
Equus is Sharon's chain who takes the shape of a black unicorn and it is often used by Sharon for data collection. It has the power to warp between places and Dimensions, taking people with it. This however does not mean that its attacking power is weak. Equus is like a shadow and it is very often in Oz's or Break's shadow.
Harisen: Although mostly for comic relief, Sharon has shown to be quite powerful with her harisen when annoyed or angered. Such as beating the likes of Break and Oz to a pulp easily. Sometimes she beats others when she is embarrassed to hide her feelings.

Trivia[]
- "Sharon" is a Hebrew name that, though in modern day is predominantly feminine, has historically been a masculine name. It means "plain" in its simplest form, though in the Hebrew Bible it specifically refers to the plain between the Samarian Hills and the coast.[1] The biblical expression "Rose of Sharon" refers to a number of flowering plants with the true plant's identity being long disputed.[2]
- Sharon's Contracted Chain Equus is directly based off the Unicorn, a character featured in Lewis Carroll's Alice Through the Looking-Glass[3] which is itself based off a traditional nursery rhyme.[4] The Unicorn historically is in constant conflict with the Lion, an aspect which is reflected by Sharon's continuous clashes with Lottie, Contractor of the lion Chain Leon.
- Her likes are, in order: black tea, sweets, romance novels, chatting, and teasing Gilbert. Her dislikes are, in order, bugs and poor-tasting tea.
- Her skills include being the tsukkomi to Break's boke. She is weak when it comes to cooking and sewing.
- Mochizuki's comment on her is, the amount of flashy scenes and important moments and such is less compared to the other main characters, but she still maintained to be a strong young woman who provided solid support for Break and their other companions in their times of weakness.
- A running gag accuses Sharon of being a shotacon when she interacts with adolescent boys. However, there is entirely a joke: Sharon has only expressed interest in clearly adult men, and in both cases the boys she interacted with were actually older than her.
- Sharon and her grandmother Sheryl are the only known female Contractors in Pandora.
- When Sharon gets intoxicated, she becomes himedere.
- Sharon has had more wardrobe changes than any other character throughout the series.
- Despite being part of the main five characters in the series, Sharon has the least important narrative role, something she frequently complains about in omake.
