The Case Study of Vanitas 5 is the fifth volume of Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas.
Front Cover[]
The central characters are Vanitas and Noé, standing back to back amidst a blizzarding snowfall, their breaths coming out in white puffs from the freezing cold. Vanitas stands in front posed for battle, dagger in his right hand and left hand stretched out behind him, glaring forward. Laid over his front from his left leg to his chest is a shadow of the spear Louisette in dark red. A long thin chain emerging from his back is shattered, broken links scattering to the wind. Noé despite standing back-to-back behind Vanitas is turned around to glare forward as well, also posed and ready for battle, a small cut trailing blood down his left cheek. Behind them is a square portrait made from worn and crumbling black bricks, framed from above and below by a system of pipes and machinery. Framed within the portrait is a huge bestial creature with red fur and three-pupiled eyes that glare with hunger. Behind everything are outlines of golden gears.
Publisher's Summary[]
The Beast of Gévaudan, which once plunged France into terror, has risen again in the nineteenth century. As Vanitas and the others investigate the relationship between the Beast and the Vampires, they find their way barred by the paladin Astolfo and Jeanne, the Hellfire Witch. Who is it that laughs in a world blanketed white...?
Inner Cover[]
In a bustling train station, with the train cart in the background, Noé and Astolfo, both dressed warmly for the winter, walk past one another to their separate destinations. Noé is in the middle of speaking to someone offscreen as he walks forth with his bag, and Murr perched on his shoulder glares suspiciously at the boy they've just passed. Astolfo himself has a polite smile on as he continues on his own path in the other direction. Neither are aware of the other, simply walking by without a glance behind.

The train ride over
Vanitas and Noé are sitting on the train, traveling to Gévaudan. Noé moans about how sleepy he is. Despite the train he's riding being a steam engine and his excitement to be experiencing it for the first time, he can't fight his drowsiness and is constantly nodding off in his seat, Murr already asleep in his lap. Vanitas sitting across from him watches with exasperation and asks if he slept at all last night. Noé had been afraid of Vanitas leaving without his knowing so he stayed up all last night. Vanitas advises Noé to take the chance to sleep now as they have time until they arrive. The train clunks along the tracks as they ride by. Noé, slowly nodding off, asks if Vanitas will disappear while he's asleep. Vanitas avoids the other's eyes and stares out the window, face twisted into a slight grimace full of thinly veiled guilt. He promises to wake Noé up when they arrive, and tells him to sleep.
What Mademoiselle Amelia saw!
Amelia peaks out from around a corner, eyes shining with interest at her discovery. And so commences Amelia's undercover project, exposing the hidden facets never before seen of a certain duo. A multitude of snapshots shows different scenes Amelia has witnessed while working at Hôtel Chouchou, mainly centered around Noé and Vanitas, along with some others. Noé brings back some strange knickknack with what looks to be no purpose, eyes shining with happiness from seemingly just how fascinating they are. Murr seeing the resident cat of the hotel, Flute, and developing a crush on her despite her indifference to him. Nox and Manet sometimes passing by the front of the hotel to watch Murr, and never coming inside despite their being able to. Orlok doing the exact same thing. Noé and Vanitas fighting due to Noé taking over Vanitas's bed with his "personal effects" (stray cats that he brought in from outside without permission).
Noé in his sleep grabbing Murr to use as a hug-pillow. Vanitas returning during a rainy day and entering the hotel soaked to the bone. Noé asking the front desk about well-paying jobs to cover for him buying so many strange knickknacks, while Amelia wonders about Vanitas's own source of income as he doesn't accept money from patients. Vanitas being spotted at a nearby restaurant eating a huge amount of oysters. Noé's absolutely shock to discover that oysters are able to be eaten at all. Vanitas and Noé having dinner together in the hotel's dining room, their argument from earlier having been settled already. Thus concludes the snapshots of Hôtel Chouchou's daily life, as seen through the eyes of Amelia.
