The Case Study of Vanitas 6 is the sixth volume of Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas.
Front Cover[]
The central character is Astolfo, posing with his spear Louisette ready for combat. Both of his hands are braced on the spear's handle and his rosary is flying upwards, as if he's in the middle of motion, and his left leg is lifted up and stepping on a large pile of broken skulls. He's turning around to look forwards with a hungry, sinister smile, blood staining his left cheek. Behind him is a circular portrait colored black and red, made up of vines, thorns, and blooming roses. Within the portrait is a writhing mass of something colored black with tendrils, unable to be clearly seen, but spilling out of the bottom of the portrait is a pile of red spider eggs. The portrait is strung up in the air by red spiderwebs emerging from each of its sides, and the redness of the webs bleeds into a black cloak fluttering in the wind below the portrait. Behind Astolfo's head, a blue butterfly with tattered wings flies away. The outlines of golden gears can be seen in the background.
Publisher's Summary[]
On the trail of the Beast of Gévaudan, Vanitas and Noé are led to the heart of the incident and the noble house of d'Apchier. There, they discover that a brave, heartrending wish to save a daughter from a Vampire's fate became the haunting first cry of the Beast itself...
Inner Cover[]
Chloé d'Apchier stands behind a set of metal cage bars, posed primly and elegantly with her hands clasped at her waist. She looks forward while leaning her head slightly against the bar to her immediate left, her eyes glowing red and her bared fangs slightly peeking out of her mouth. Wound around the bars before her are blooming white roses, their thorny stems wrapping tightly around each iron bar in an airtight grip. In front of her face is a red rose, obscuring the sight of her left eye. Outlines of golden gears are overlaid before her image.

Wild child
Chloé and Jeanne lie in the grass together underneath the shade of the trees and the clear blue sky and the shining run. A pair of birds fly above them, which Chloé points out happily, making Jeanne perk up as well. The two of them lay side-by-side, laughing happily as they bask in the light of the world together. Jeanne starts drooling and, her stomach rumbling hungrily, asks if she should go catch the birds so they can eat them. Chloé deadpans, "What?"
Sister Roland's confessional counseling office
Roland has, for yet unclear reasons, decided to open up his own confessional booth, which will be run by himself dressed as a nun. Upon announcing this, he answers a collection of questions regarding the opening of this booth. Why a nun? Roland wearing a priest's robe would look almost no different from how he usually dresses, which he considers dull; and so his answer is "for personal reasons" (and he adds on that he thinks he looks good in the outfit). It's been a while since he's been seen in the story, how has he been? Roland is doing fantastic. Is it alright to stop by the booth even with nothing to confess? Roland is willing to accept anything that anyone coming to the booth will bring. Ordinary confessions, personal troubles, absolutely anything. Roland then proceeds to remove the screen separating him so as look people in the eye as they talk.
Thus follows a collection of various characters coming to the confessional booth with their own problems that they wish to confess. Their identities have been protected with pseudonyms and black bars obscuring their faces — though it is still rather obvious who is the person in question.
"Lost lamb N." is troubled by the fact that Vanitas always gets lost when they're out walking together, and he wonders how to fix the issue. Roland confesses that he himself gets lost very easily, but his subordinates will always come to find him, which he is grateful for; so he advises Noé to use getting lost as an opportunity to strengthen his and Vanitas's bonds. "Lost lamb J." confesses once having eaten a full range of snacks just before mealtime, and thus only having been able to eat a single portion of the dinner prepared, and she feels guilty for wasting the cooks' efforts and worrying her master as a result. Roland assures Jeanne that eating what she likes when she wants to is fine, especially since she finished her dinner on top of that, and he believes that women with hearty appetites are wonderful. "Lost lambs M. & G." come running into the booth and beg Roland to come back with them to work. Roland greets Maria and Georges warmly, but turns them down as he is currently not their captain. He is a nun now.
"Lost lamb L." has recently found a "nasty pest" bothering a woman who is important to him, and he's so worried for her that he can barely focus on his duties; though in a fluster he assures he and the woman are not lovers. Roland advises Luca to tell his precious person how much he loves her to get the worry off his chest, and even if he ends up rejected he will be sure to find more love afterwards. "Lost lamb O." complains that a colleague of his has been causing trouble in their work to the point of him being at risk for getting into trouble, and he asks about "Sister Roland's" thoughts on this. Roland denies trying to cause trouble in work, as he simply outright and wholeheartedly refuses to do something he doesn't want to do. Also, Olivier has known Roland for over a decade now, so he knew full well what he was getting into when recommending Roland for this position. "Lost Vanitas" retreats with his back against the wall, cowering in utter fear, and tries to make an escape. Roland won't let him. He eagerly urges Vanitas to come closer so they can speak, expresses how much he wants to learn about him, asks him his birthday, if he has a lover, what his favorite food is. Vanitas is terrified.
Roland finishes off by posing with his bicep flexed and telling his "lost lambs" to stop by again.
