The Case Study of Vanitas Volume 8 is the eighth volume of Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas.
Front Cover[]
The central character is Dominique, in the middle of falling backwards as she stares forlornly forwards and her long hair flies upwards in the air, bleeding into shades of bright yellow. In her right hand is her sword, which she has unsheathed and is wielding before her in a defensive position, blade pointed straight down. Behind her is a gilded portrait decorated with golden roses, whose thorny vines are tightly ensnaring her left arm, which is plunging into the mirror that the portrait frames as if made of water. The lower half of the mirror where Dominique's hand is plunging into contains the reflection of Louis's back, his face obscured and turned away from view. The upper half of the mirror near Dominique's head is cracked and slowly shattering. Yellow flower petals blow in the wind around her, and the outline of golden gears lay in the background.
Publisher's Summary[]
The Beast of Gévaudan is put to rest once and for all as Chloé makes peace with her truest desire—but Vanitas’s troubles continue as both he and Jeanne are struck with certain... ailments of the heart! There’s no time for him to dwell on this rather unwelcome development, though, as Domi is swept away in the machinations of a phantom from his past...
Inner Cover[]
Louis lies upside-down amidst the pitch black background, where the outlines of multicolor wooden stakes float around his form. Louis smiles knowingly, almost sinisterly as he grasps at his chest, which appears to be steadily shattering to pieces, his hands stained with blood. A red ribbon wraps loosely around his neck, trailing off beyond his head and scattering into red ashes like splatters of blood in the air.

Hôtel Miaou Miaou
"Hôtel Miaou Miaou" is a parody of The Case Study of Vanitas, in which the human and Vampire characters are now cats (or dogs) and the two cat characters, Murr and Flute, are human. Flute is a young girl who is shy and demure, and Murr is a young boy who seems to always be irritated by something. They work together at Hôtel Miaou Miaou, the residence of a collection of cats and dogs of all kinds, ready to greet guests with energy, noise, and fun. The animal characters are as follows.
Vanitas is a black cat with a glossy, silky smooth coat and shining blue eyes. He's temperamental and hates to be pet or held, but will occasionally tease guests on a whim sometimes. He always manages to find Noé when he gets lost, and likes to be on the hotel roof. Jeanne is a tabby cat who is incredibly athletic and loves to eat, often begging the kitchen for snacks. She's cautious towards people at first but becomes greatly affectionate once bonded to someone; and lately, that someone seems to be Vanitas. Noé is a Siamese cat who is filled to the brim with curiosity and a love for anything fun. He's almost a dog of his own, his tail wagging wildly back and forth whenever he's happy as if he's an eager puppy. He's mischievous and gets lost easily, whereupon Vanitas will have to go find him. Dominique is a long-haired cat with a sisterly energy, bearing a long gorgeous fluffy tail which is her pride and joy. She's jealous about Vanitas being better at finding a lost Noé than her, but in general is very good at looking after others. When she encounters a situation she can't cope with, her mind will fly to the ends of the universe.
Luca is the youngest of the group and is still a small kitten, but remains to be the most practical and well-mannered of everyone. He always makes sure to greet and bid farewell to guests, but sometimes will wear himself out with how considerate he is. He adores Jeanne, to the point of scheming to run Vanitas out of the hotel. Dante is a cat with stout limbs and a chubby build, meaning his jumps often don't work out. He loves money, and in exchange for a tip placed in his little coin purse, he'll offer to show guests around the hotel and take a variety of requests. Ruthven is a huge Maine Coon with long bright red fur. He's rarely seen in public, always in his own room immersed in his own business. He has a calm demeanor but aggressively pursues whatever he's interested in. He is a feline teacher who occasionally holds classes for Noé and Jeanne.
Roland is a big golden retriever whose tail is always wagging vigorously from the powerful force of his own joy. He's always full of energy and always lost, but he's also always loud so everyone knows where he is anyways. He loves Olivier and he loves Vanitas and he loves everyone. Everyday is fun and happy for this peppy pooch, woof! Olivier is a black dog with a glossy coat (and for some reason often smokes cigarettes). He shares a room with Roland but wishes for his own private space. The other dogs are always noisy to his annoyance, but when he gets mad he's louder than all of them combines. Astolfo is a tiny fluffy Pomeranian. He barks a lot.
Hôtel Miaou Miaou eagerly awaits for your visit.
