Bonus Story[]
The Beast of Gévaudan during its reign in the eighteenth century was known for targeting in particular women and children. As a result a famous story went around that the dragoons disguised themselves as women in order to bait the Beast out and ambush it. And so, Dante says, they should—Vanitas with the threat of violence in his eyes tells him no. Dante huffs that he didn't finish his sentence but Vanitas doesn't need him to and refuses again. He, Dante, Johann, and Noé are in a town on the way to Saugues and discussing this to pass the time. Johann whines for Vanitas to try out the idea, but Vanitas knowing they simply want to play around is vehement in his refusal. Listening to this quietly, Noé comes to a realization. He should crossdress as a woman and lure out the Beast. Dante, baffled, asks why he thinks that.
Noé almost braggingly declares that despite how he looks he's confident in his ability to crossdress very well, recalling his childhood in which Dominique made him the princess in her games and Louis while trembling and hiding his face in his hands told him how much it suited him. Dante wonders if that was really praise. However no matter how curious the idea of Noé crossdressing is, Johann and Dante insist on Vanitas being the one to crossdress (because they just want to bully him) and Vanitas irritably refuses again. Noé however says it's impossible with Vanitas as someone with a personality as terrible as his could never pass off as a woman. Vanitas stares dead-eyed at Noé as Johann and Dante cover their hands with amusement behind him. Vanitas's lip twitches.
"HOW IS THIS!!!!" Vanitas declares showing off his dress. It is an intricate design with layered skirts, brightly colored shawls, ribbons tied into bows and flowers, even a laced corset around the waist. Paired with the lace gloves, the matching lace choker, the jewelry, the makeup painting his face, and his modestly styled hair, he's the perfect picture of a high-class woman. Johann brandishing the makeup supplies and hairbrush gushes at how beautiful Vanitas looks in the full outfit. Dante asks where he even got all this from and Johann declares it to be a lady's secret. Vanitas smiles, the accentuation of his makeup and clothing making his expression almost seductive, and Dante blushes bright red. Johann immediately teases him for this which Dante tries to deny while Vanitas smugly huffs.
Vanitas brags at Noé that he can take back his words anytime he wishes after seeing him. Noé leans in extremely close to Vanitas, surprising him stiff, and examines every inch of his appearance from top to bottom. Noé's eyes shine as he takes him in and he apologizes, indeed taking back his words. With a bright and excited smile, eyes lighting up with amazement, he declares how much the look suits him and that he can truly only see Vanitas as a woman. Vanitas growls with anger at this. Johann and Dante watch with amusement in the background.
