He conducted an experiment that rewrote the World Formula on a global scale, causing the titular disaster the Babel Incident. Multiple cataclysms nearly brought about humanity's ruin. The world spent a long time simply recovering from the calamity. People discovered existences that were not in the world prior to Babel. New minerals, new plants, new species similar to humans but fundamentally different. The world had irreparably changed.

The first to serve her was the Shapeless One, who continued to do so longer than any other. An anomalous existence, a Vampire born under the Blue Moon, given the name "Vanitas" was born. They were shunned and exiled by their peers. To enact revenge, they created the Book of Vanitas which possesses the power to interfere with Vampires' True Names, their constitutive formulas. The tension between the original human race and the new race of Vampires rose. The Catholic Church began to violently persecute Vampires as "heretics," forming the faction of Chasseurs solely for hunting them down indiscriminately. Research on the World Formula was outlawed by the Church. The conflict between humans and Vampires erupted into a War.

Her father forbade her from going outside or being seen in public to protect her. At age eleven she stopped outwardly aging and was publicly stated to have died of illness. The Marquis d'Apchier and their entire family dedicated everything to researching the World Formula and turn Chloé back into a human. This effort continued even after his passing, carrying on in the generations that followed. The d'Apchiers' goal became for the sake of political gain. Decades passed. The d'Apchiers research began to take proper form in a World Formula Alteration Device, which was slowly being completed. August Ruthven, a moderate between humans and Vampires, came to assist in the d'Apchiers' research, hoping their work would help bring about peace between the races. He meets Chloé and they form a close friendship. In the many years that followed Ruthven would make regular visits to Chloé's castle. Ruthven took in Éric and Louise as students. These two themselves discovered an orphaned Jeanne and took her in as their daughter. On one visit to Chloé, Ruthven needed to attend an assembly with Éric and Louise and thus left a young Jeanne in the care of Chloé. In their time together, the two would come to love one another as sisters. In the two years that followed, Vampire hunts would begin escalating in nearby regions. Ruthven would not visit Chloé in that time, causing her to worry. Ruthven in this time arranged to broker proper peace between Vampires and humans. At one of these meetings, Éric and Louise betrayed him and the Vampiric aristocracy to the humans. Ruthven was horrifically injured, his right eye scarred beyond repair, and his students punished as race traitors. Jeanne as their daughter was made a Bourreau to further atone. The fighting between the races worsened. Marquis Machina, a comrade of Ruthven's, came to visit Chloé in his place and updated her on all that had happened. He offered her to join him with the rest of their kind. Chloé, while horrified for her friends, rejected him as she could not leave the d'Apchiers. Naenia began haunting her Ruthven visited Chloé himself, despite still being injured and not of sound mind. He tried to get the d'Apchiers' Alteration Device, even assaulting Chloé and biting her to try and curse her into relenting the research to him. Chloé dispelled the curse. Ruthven left, their friendship truly ended. Naenia's influence on Chloé grew. Chloé spent the next thirty years throwing herself into the d'Apchiers' research. In this time, Ruthven also threw himself into his work. He became adopted by the Grand Duke Oriflamme and used that familial authority to achieve a seat in the Senate. With all this additional power at his disposal, Ruthven managed to arrange for a real armistice in the War. In secret, he had been conducting experiments on a newfound discovery, a dimension existing one step beyond the humans' earth which is then dubbed Altus and considered a paradise for Vampires. It was decided that the entire Vampire race would migrate into Altus to live separately for the foreseeable future. 1702. Marquis Machina once again visited Chloé to give her updates on the outside world, the War, and everything Ruthven had been up to. He offered once again to take her to the Vampires' world, she rejected him once again.
