Introduction

The Case Study of Vanitash!!!! —Expanded Edition— is a chapter from Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. It is a lengthened installment of the Vanitashu no Karute series, a mini-comic drawn on the manga's free pages of every monthly issue for the Gangan JOKER magazine.

At the time of this chapter's release, May 2021, Volume 9 was undergoing publication and slated to be released shortly after. Thus the main serial for The Case Study of Vanitas was put on break to allow Mochizuki time to complete the work for the nineth volume, and instead this Vanitashu no Karute released in between Mémoire 51: Tempest and Mémoire 52: Sens Unique.

The chapter features a celebration between the cast of The Case Study of Vanitas, commemorating the then upcoming release of the anime adaptation.

Summary[]

A message from Jun Mochizuki stating that the serial for The Case Study of Vanitas is off for that month to allow her time to work on the upcoming volume to be released, Volume 9. Instead, she requests that readers enjoy an expended edition of The Case Study of Vanitash!!! (Dominique just below reads the final pages of Mémoire 51: Tempest and panics over whether Noé is okay.)

The three Dhampirs, Dante, Johann, and Riche celebrate with excited shouts that the TV anime for The Case Study of Vanitas will start airing in July 2021, and they request support from all those reading. An ecstatic Noé and a less impressed Vanitas also throw their hands up in celebration in the background. Jeanne, eyes glinting with a dark and predatory hunger, searches around for Vanitas, who hides behind Noé and Amelia. Dominique and Luca both use their bodies to block off her view, and they ask those who appear in the first episode for their thoughts on the program.

Vanitas, purposefully acting bashful, says that while he knows full well about himself being attractive, he becomes absolutely devastating when given voice and movement. He claims to feel guilty for outshining Dante and the other mob characters so vastly. Luca’s voice becomes strained as he hears this answer. Dante wriggles around excitedly, face flushed and smile full of delighted pleasure, bragging about how cool he looked while talking and moving. Johann and Riche in the background scold him for being creepy. Noé flaps and waves his arms in the air, face flushed red and eyes shining like stars, so full of joy that he can hardly form words. Dominique and Luca coo, and express how happy they are for him. The question turns to Amelia, and she giggles bashfully as everyone’s gazes are on her. She smirks. She declares that, upon seeing her with animation and hearing her voice, she instantly thought that she won. Vanitas asks against who. Dante asks if she intends to be the heroine. Luca shares in his nervous excitement to appear in the second episode, Dominique agreeing happily, while Jeanne continues to vibrate in place behind them.

Johann suddenly claps and announces that they have a special event planned to commemorate the anime’s release, as Dante and Riche laugh mischievously beside him. Everyone is puzzles as to what it could be. Johann holds up a file reading “Confidential!” and announces that he will be revealing everyone’s birthdays. Vanitas exclaims in horror. He argues with Dante, demanding how they know such information on him. Dante attests this to the creator’s knowledge, not their own, to which Vanitas yells about the abuse of authority and the invasion of privacy. While he continues to fuss and rant and yell, Noé taps his shoulder and points above. A pair of boxes reading “Sept. 28” and “Feb. 7” respectively float above Noé and Vanitas’s heads, having appeared as Johann opens the file. Vanitas seethes and tries to grab and fight with the floating box.

Dominique, “June 1” above her, watches him and notes that she doesn’t believe people knowing their birthdays will be any inconvenient. Jeanne lifts her hand and smiles with awe as the box reading “April 21” above her floats away from her grasp. Luca looks in awe up at the “July 31” above him and asks what this has to do with the anime. The three Dhampirs all at once hold up ring gestures, eyes shining as if reflecting gold, and cite that celebrating characters’ birthdays gives more opportunity to sell merch. Dominique grumbles about them being money-grubbers.

Roland and Olivier appear as well, “Aug. 19!!” appearing above the former’s head as he leaps to Vanitas with open arms and declares that he’s here to play. Vanitas screams in fright. Roland, dragging a petrified Vanitas downstairs by the arm, leads everyone down to where food and refreshments await them so they can have a proper party to celebrate. Riche and Amelia excitedly join, as Olivier with “Nov. 3” stands nearby and Astolfo with “Jan. 6” lurks at the doorway and growls Roland’s name in fury.

Vanitas collapses face-down onto the table, already exhausted to his limit. He asks for some water, so Noé hands him a glass from the refreshments table. Vanitas gulps the glass down in seconds. He pauses, cup still held up to his lips. His face is completely red. He collapses again, face slamming into the table, instantly passing out. Noé calls to him in concern. Dante realizes that what he drank wasn’t water, it was alcohol. Vanitas can’t hold his liquor in the slightest, resulting in such a sight—which is actually quite rare considering how careful and wary he usually is about alcohol. Noé still worries as the drinks they have are very weak, to which Dante points out that he chugged it all at once. As they speak Vanitas’s eyes spin with intoxication. Johann asks Noé about his own alcohol tolerance, which Noé believes to be about average. Dominique, in the middle of cleaning up Jeanne’s messy face from eating, immediately protests to giving Noé alcohol. She claims that when he gets drunk, he ki—Dominique stops. She reels back, stopping herself. She holds a hand up, wordlessly asking for a moment. Dominique continues: he gets very, excessively physically affectionate, so they should refrain from getting him drunk. Everyone mutters about what she almost said, “Ki…” as Noé bashfully rubs the back of his head.

Amelia walks up to Noé and offers him a sip of some wine, face flushed and eager. Meanwhile, Vanitas is laying passed out drunk (after a single shot of watered-down alcohol) on a couch, and Jeanne kneels down to his level worriedly. She asks if he’d like to sleep in his room instead of there, if he’d like her to escort him there, but he just refuses. She walks away to get him a blanket, but stops. Her hand is squeezed and she turns around in surprise. Vanitas, face flushed red and brow furrowed, half-consciously nuzzles his face against her hand, as if searching for her warmth, begging her to stay. A surge of intense emotions comes over Jeanne like a tsunami. She’s frozen in place for a moment, staring at his vulnerable form and shaking with desire. She picks him up onto her back and starts walking out. Dominique scolds her and tells her to put him down.

As the party continues, Roland and Olivier sit side-by-side and watch the celebrations go on. Roland marvels at the sight before him with shining eyes. Jeanne laughing uproariously, Luca trying to calm her down, Dominique weeping uncontrollably, Amelia offering Noé wine, Astolfo watching and seething, Dante and Riche getting drunk together, Johann preventing them from having more wine, Astolfo getting his own glass of wine and trying a drink for the first time, Noé’s face flushing as he starts to get drunk as well, Vanitas turning green as the nausea overcomes him. Roland watches them all. The way they laugh together, stand together, celebrate together, not caring one bit of them being Vampire or human or neither. He tells Olivier to look at such a harmonious sight, and asks if he finds it wonderful as well?

Olivier looks to them all. He closes his eyes.

“All I’m seeing is total chaos.”

Dante, Johann, and Riche, all totally drunk, throw their hands to the air. Noé, also drunk, tries to kiss a protesting Luca while Amelia behind tries to stop him. Jeanne cheers triumphantly with her fist to the air while Dominique weeps and leans against her. Astolfo nuzzles up to Roland, whom he calls “Lord Knight” and who pets his head indulgently. Vanitas throws up. At once all of them (who are conscious enough to do so) shout together:

“We’re looking forward to the animeeee!!”
