Chasseur —Those Who Hunt Crimson— is the nineth episode of the anime adaptation of Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas.
Synopsis[]
The battle with Roland is on! Vanitas and Noé flee with the Chasseurs in hot pursuit. Vanitas reveals why he entered the Chasseur's underground domain and how he knows his way around. After an unnecessary amount of drama, Vanitas finds whom he seeks.
Summary[]
With Noé's vision affected, Vanitas tells him to run, however, Noé refuses to leave Vanitas. Learning that this is Vanitas, Roland hugs him in happiness for being able to find him so soon and finds him pitiful for being used by the vampires, wondering how they hold him. Angry, Vanitas cuts Roland's face with his nails, stating that they never change and look down on others. Vanitas explains that he is with the vampires by his own choice and all he does is by his own free will. However, Roland cries, again stating that Vanitas is pitiful and that if he turns his back God's light won't reach him, and that he will be saving him from the vampires.

Roland prepares to fight
Noé's vision starts to return, but in that moment, Roland draws out his weapon and attacks him. Vanitas explains that Chasseurs are no ordinary human and use drugs to enhance their combat prowess. Noé is surprised how fast is Ronald, but both manage to dodge each other attacks. As Roland's blade turn into a whip, Noé grabs a candle holder and blocks the attack, however Roland activates a secret mechanism on the weapon, shocking Noé with it. Noé falls on his knees and Roland is about to finish him, however, Vanitas had managed to escape and gets in Roland's way, who changes his attack to not hit Vanitas. Noé uses the opportunity and throws Roland at a pillar and then escapes with Vanitas. Their fight attracted Maria and Georges, two members of Roland's squad. As he tells them there are intruders and one of them is a vampire, the three head out to look for Noé and Vanitas.

Vanitas triggered by Roland
Vanitas is quite annoyed by Roland and his goodwill behavior. Vanitas wonders if Noé can defeat him, but Noé is unsure, however with Vanitas, he is sure they can win. Vanitas then explains he came looking for Moreau, a man obsessed with vampire research and his madness got him expelled from the Chessaurs. Vanitas then shows the button that Dante managed to get and reveals the number 128 on its back. Vanitas explains that the abductions are not done by ordinary Chessaurs, but by enhanced humans, the fruit of Moreau's human experiments.
Moreau observes Vanitas and Noé, commenting that Vanitas looks familiar. He then remembers Vanitas from doing experiments on him, and gets happy that he is back as he lost him due to the Vampire of the Blue Moon. Meanwhile, Ronald reports to the Chessaurs that there are intruders, but orders them to capture the human alive.

Roland finds the defeated Chasseurs
Going around the labyrinth, Roland sees some defeated Chessaurs and automatons turning against them, who tell him that its like the intruders know the tunnels and circled behind them and hunted them down. Noé is surprised that Vanitas can tamper with the automatons, but Vanitas reveals he tampered with the astermite powering the automatons, as the stone has a conduit to the World Formula, allowing him to rewrite its formula. Noé has many questions, but is not sure if he should ask now. Vanitas reveals that his parents were slain by vampires and the Chessaurs saved him, and then trained him to join them. However, Moreau noticed him and he became his test subject. He also spend years in the tunnels and knows them well. Vanitas states that he thinks of humans and vampires the same as both are selfish creatures. As he makes certain face, Noé is annoyed he done it again and yells at him, but as they argue Roland and other Chessaurs find them. Vanitas then uses a flash bomb and closes a security gate, allowing them to escape.
Vanitas tells Noé they need to beat Roland without fighting as they are getting close to Moreau and his enhanced humans and they can't afford to be hurt. Vanitas sees Maria and knocks her out, wanting to take her hostage, but Noé refuses as that will destroy any hope of peaceful resolution. Vanitas doesn't believe that would be possible, telling Noé that shackling themselves makes them weak and digs their own grave. However, not wanting to argue anymore, Vanitas tells Noé that they are going separate ways as one day his weakness will lead to Vanitas death. Annoyed, Noé then gives a scary look, stating that they are taking a hostage.

Noé introduces himself to Roland
Continuing down the tunnels, Ronald and Georges find Noé and Vanitas. Noé holds Vanitas hostage, telling Roland that if he makes a wrong move, he will kill Vanitas. Georges thinks this could be an act, and Vanitas also finds Noé's act weak, however, Noé states this isn't an act and giving a scary look, he tells Vanitas that they will together defeat Roland as he had said earlier. Scared, Vanitas starts asking Roland to save him. Noé states he agrees with what Vanitas said earlier and they must not allow Roland to deal the first blow. Noé then throws Vanitas, Roland charges to grab him, while Georges charges at Noé. Noé dodges Georges and uses him as a stepping stone to launch himself and then kick down Roland. Noé then grabs Roland and introduces himself, apologizing for entering his domain, but explains they didn't kill any men and they wish to investigate something. As more Chessaurs come, Vanitas yells that Dr. Moreau lives.
Ronald decides to listen to them and hearing the abduction story, Roland believes Vanitas. However, Roland wonders if Noé is really a vampire as he is quite different than the ones he knows. Vanitas explains its because Chessaurs hunt only the violent ones who rampage in the human world. As he gets interested, Ronald then wishes to be friends with Noé, wanting to learn more about him. That shocks everyone, but Noé gladly accepts. Roland then decides to join them, as its the Chessaurs duty to deal with Moreau.
As they reach Moreau's secret lab and open the doors, Moreau welcomes them with confetti and wonders if Vanitas, "number 69" remembers him.
